Wonder if someone could point in the right direction here...

I installed Windows 8 x64 just after Christmas and all was well, actually quite liked the OS after getting used to the changes.

More recently the PC has started behaving oddly - which it never used to do with Win 7.

- It won't always go to sleep properly (hangs for ages and sometimes turns off)
- It won't always shut down properly (BSOD or the same hang and eventually power down)
- Random stuttering when playing video
- Random high CPU usage from a system process that needs a restart to resolve.

And just the other evening, after a reboot, it would get to the desktop (i think) but there'd be no display. I ended up having to do a 'refresh' and reinstall all my programs to get it working again. I probably could have gone into Safe Mode and uninstalled/reinstalled the driver...if I could figure out how to actually get into safe mode

I think one of the HDDs has died (can't format, can't access files and scan reporting bad sectors) but this isn't the system drive - but its still connected to the system.

Specs:
E6600
Asus D5H Deluxe Mobo
4GB RAM
nVidia 8800GS

Any ideas? Does it sound like a driver thing or hardware?

Thanks guys. Was on my list of things to try - just didn't want to go poking around inside as the PC if it could have been something else. Its in a pretty awkward to get to spot :p

I'll give it a shot, fingers crossed.

The best way to track a problem if you think it may be hardware related is start with the bare minimum number of components, then add them in one at at time until things start falling over
