FS-X High quality texture pack?

Apologies if these screenshots are a bit large! If you mean scenery then heres a few exmaples of Horizons excellent Generation-X photo scenery (no Scotland as of yet which is a shame but it will come out eventually). Their website is here http://www.horizonsimulation.com/shopuk/

There is no autogen used in the screenshots but I prefer it that way, it runs surprisingly smoothly too. The water mask update which is coming out soon along with nightlighting is absolutely great.

*edit*

A few shots of the north wales area, I dont have the northely region disk yet so you can see where the photo scenery drops off and the default MS scenery starts.

Some stunning shots there, but, at a price.

Is there not some way of incorporating Google earths scenery into FSX / FS9 ?

There is a free pack available for Europe, I guess without the same detail as the one noted above...

Modified Ground Textures for Europe by Adam Mills

but free is free..!!!!

The pack weighs in at 700mb and I will search around for the link, I have lost it at the moment...!!!!

The readme...

Modified Ground Textures for Europe:

With these textures I have tried to solve three problems, in the first place, to deal with the 'desert' problem that so many people have complained of, secondly, to deal with the winter textures and thirdly and finally to deal with the autumn textures. With regard to the 'desert' probelm, I have modified the default textures in tone and colour to try, so far as is possible, to reduce or eliminate the barren brown colour of the default textures. The result is that mountainous areas now no longer look as if they are covered with sand! In addition, since I found the drab washed-out fawn colour of the winter textures utterly unrealistic I modified those in an attempt to make winter look more like winter! Finally, I thought that many of the autumn textures were too orange as well as suggesting that the entire european countryside was given over to wheat fields, again I have tried to correct this.

I have endeavoured to modify the textures in such a way as to increase the verisimilitude of the simulated world. As I have already said, for the most part I have modified only the autumn and winter textures but in some cases I have been obliged to modify whole seasonal sets. It is for this reason that I have not divided the texture sets by seasons.

The texture set comes in 8 parts (respecting the file size limitation that AVSIM have imposed on uploads to their library). Because all the textures blend with one another I think it probably best to install them all rather than do it piecemeal one part at a time.

Parts 1 to 3 comprise the field textures
Parts 4 to 6 comprise the non-field textures
Parts 7 and 8 comprise the town textures.

EDIT:

They are here but a free registration is required to download them....

Just regarding the price I bought two of the three discs for £17.99 each and although it sounds a bit pricey you are getting graphics that are rumoured to be superior to many of the commercial flight simulator engines. And if you think the screenshots look nice you should see it in motion :) I have core 2 duo processor but use an X1900 256 mb card so I can only imagine it looking a lot better at much higher res on a more powerful card. Saying that even on my card the lack of autogen makes the whole experience run much smoother than std FSX and still managed to look much better.

About the water masks, here is an example of before and after screen shots, they have edited 1000s of water bodies and coastal regions so instead of the water bodies being a static photo texture its proper animated FSX water. I think anything bigger than a pond has been edited, a huge undertaking really! Very impressed with the scenery but it's each to their own with the price. I think it is great vaule for what you get. :)

Have you checked the prices since you bought them, they do seem to be more than you have paid.

The screenshots are, as I have already noted, superb :)

I would find it difficult though to buy the packs at the current asking price.

play.com have em for that price - though, they are out of stock atm.

The problem being with the upcoming Nightlighting and water mask update patch you will be looking at what must be at least a few gigs worth of data to download (I have no idea how much exactly but its going to be a very big download). I think the company are manufacturing a new DVD set with these updates included and this won't be out until the updates are released, it might be in the next week or two or it could be months! So I am guessing Play wont have any stock until the new version of the DVD comes out :/

I would like to get disc 3 as Snowdonia is excellent and I only have half of it :)

I take it all the textures of the above pictures are just flat, and not 3D? Once you got low enough are the hills flat, or raised?

No its all 3d, the photo textures are mapped over a more accurate (5m) mesh (not the standard randomish mesh that comes with FSX) so things such as hills, mountains, valleys and cliffs etc are where they should be. As the photo textures are in the right place it kind of tricks your eyes into a very realistic experience. Quite simple in theory (as long as the textures lines up with the mesh, there is the odd annomally here and there) but also very clever, would be good to see more of it in games.

What does this game play like now? Is performance increased from the demo?

I play with autogen off with an X1900 and 2g of ram all other settings maxed (apart from some of the AI traffic etc) and get up to 100 fps bu usually lock it to 40 fps. The autogen option and AI can kill the fps off so it's just a case of compromise, word of warning you might need to read up a bit on the tweaking to get FSX running well and looking good. If you need any suggestions give me a shout I can post a few tweaks.
