I have a troubling problem and I want advice.

Situation
At work we have 5 DCs (1 2003 R2, 1 2003, 3 2000). Obviously, only one is the FSMO holder. The problem is, the RID operation isn't functioning properly. Its not giving out SIDs to other DCs on the domain. I can't transfer the role either; it say the FSMO holder can't be contacted, but there isn't a connection problem.

Any idea on troubleshooting RID Operations or how to transfer the role without having to reinstall a server with very important DBs on them?

Thanks

You can forcibly demote the DC and 'seize' the roles if you can't transfer them, KB255504.

I know, but the server would need to be reinstalled, which is the best part of 3 days work just to get it up afterwards....Any other options?

Just out of interest, did you manage to clear this issue up?

Yes i did. Then someone decided to mess up the RAID config and wipe the discs.

It ended up being a replication issue that forced the FSMO operator to consider its role void as it hadn't replicated in nearly 2 weeks.

After trawling through the event logs, it only took me about 2 1/2 hours to fix it...

So now I'm at work doing a disaster recovery.

Damn, that sucks. Especially after you diagnosed and fixed an issue like that. I'm feeling your pain mate. Good luck with the disaster recovery though :)

It sucks big style! I had to go into work this morning as well but only cause we had cablers in and they needed a key for a cabinet!

Yeah, and the last backup we had is from yesterday before I fixed the issue. But atleast I know what to do now.
