FSX - does it get boring quick?

Hi guys,

Finally...FIIIIIIIIIIIIINALLY, got my 1st build to work!!

Ive christened it with STALKER, the orange box, COD4 (well maybe tommorow, have it for 360...decisions) and have always wanted to try out a flight sim.

Now from work I can get FSX deluxe and the add on pack for £40-£50 (cant remember exact :)) and may get a joystick too.

My question is, will it get boring quickly? I would like to do missions and stuff - are there a lot of them?

Also, would my rig run it pretty good?

e6420 cpu
2gb DDR2 Ram
7900gto 512

Cheers guys :D

its epicly dependent on the CPU and unfortunatley, even the best of rigs wont play it that well... well im talking more with loads of addons - so really the default stuff with SP2 should be OK. I've read somewhere that its like a balance between CPU and GPU speed.. or somethng.

It depends what you do in it and enjoy.. the default planes are horribly unrealistic but if you dont know jack about airliners/GA planes then theyll look and feel realistic ;)

But yeah it will, I suppose, especialy flying around the default scenery - theres hardly any photo scenery and its all auto generated stuff.. so taking off from manchester and landing at heathrow - you wouldnt really notice any difference.

The missions are quite fun and very plausible and yeap there's quite a few.

If you want realism - addons are the way to go - but they're extremely expensive - £20-30 for some planes. A lot of people find the fun in replicating real life stuff.. so doing a Heathrow > Frankfurt flight with all the real life systems in a 757 or 767 using proper routes, manuals etc.

but if you're in it for a quick blast now and then - then yeah youll enjoy it.. its very user/noob friendly compared to other flight sims :)

I was looking at this, but it does look pricey for the amount it costs. IMO I would buy Lock-on Gold. Its a good Fighter Plane game with lots of action. Much cheaper as well ;)

Yes must say lockon is very good > if you do go for lockon look out for ironhands tuts he's the man for getting you up and running with no prob.

They are two completley different games! Lockon is a "simulator" where you go around blowing stuff up and shooting down hostiles. FSX is where you practice your landings in your Cessna in a remote part of alaska/beirut/other airport.

FS-X is boring, unless you're a pilot or extremely dull. Could you imagine a "london taxi cab" sim?

That would be awesome. Pick up some drunken idiots in your cab. Have them vomit in the back and spend an hour virtually scrubbing it out LOL.

You get bonus points for picking up non english speaking passengers and deciphering where they want to go. :D

I like FSX but only with non standard aircraft. I generally use it for practicing takeoffs and landing, it's about the only way I get real entertainment out of it. Oh and doing dead stick (engine off) landings with a decent glide involved.

I miss the good old days with Lucasarts Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, Battle of Britain, F-29, F-22, F-19, Comanche, Apache, X-Wing.

FSX isn't boring. It isn't HalfLife or Quake and if that's what you're expecting then forget it. FSX has a very long (not steep though) learning curve and if you really want to learn all about flight, give it time and it will richly reward you for it.

There's nothing arcade about it though, it's pure simulation. Make sure that's what you want and you won't be disappointed.

Why not try Flight Gear first of all? It's not as polished as FSX, but it's free so you can see if you get bored quickly of flight sims or not without having spent a penny.

I quite like playing FSX when I want something relaxing, it's nice just flying around different places but after a while I do start to wish the trigger button on my joystick did something.............................

I'm after a sim to make use of my joystick. Like the look of Lock-on but seems extremely complicated!
