hey, im getting myself a laptop and want to be able to access my computer so i can download files from my computer over the internet. Are there any guides or tutorials that i can look at, or if anyone can give me some advice.

thanks

You basically just need an ftp server set up on your pc with port 21 forwarded from your router to your pc IP address (assuming you'll be using a router) and make sure port 21 isn't blocked by any firewalls. Then just use IE/firefox or preferably an ftp client on your laptop and connect to your ftp server using your home internet IP address and user/password you set up on the ftp server.

Serv-U FTP server is very good imo but not free (30 day trial IIRC).
I've used ws_ftp server successfuly before so you could try that.
There are free ones around. It's probably best to find one you like the look of and then search google for a set up guide if you can't figure it out or ask on here once you know what you'll be using.
