FTP Server on Home Connection

Hi,
I need to temporarily run an FTP server on my comp over my regular home DSL internet connection to efficiently serve up a 1+ GB file to someone. I'll set max connections to one and shut it down when the transfer is done.

Anyone done this and gotten yelled at or even cut off by their service provider? Because technically one is not allowed to run a FTP or HTTP server on a home connection. I would like to avoid undue hassles like that.

Couldn't seem to get through on the ISP's support line today, so thought I'd just ask here.

What ISP are you with? tbh i cant really see them kicking up so much of a fuss for such a 'small' amount of data.

I'm not in UK. It's not one of the UK ones. I do bit torrent now and then without hassle which could indicate that they are easy going. I'm just particularly worried now because I really can't lose my connection for a day or two at the moment. Was worried that if the 1+ GB FTP transfer were flagged, that someone there might jump to conclusions, because running a public server definately would be a very bad thing.

Maybe I'll just use msn or something to transfer it... problem there is msn sometimes fails in the middle of it and you can't resume it... don't know.

Shouldn't matter unless your ISP uses traffic shaping to affect your connection when the file is transferring. I think ISPs don't bother with servers unless it's interfering with their network in a major way and it also means they don't have to support server software.

I wish I could. Would be painless to set up a file serve in Azureus, but the other person is on the all-thumbs end of the spectrum. Getting them to install a bt client would be like a quantum leap.

But thanks everyone. This gives me a better idea of the issue.

In any other case, I'd just give it a whirl without worrying about it, but I can't lose my connection for even a day at the moment for other reasons.

Maybe I'll just use msn and cross my fingers that it doesn't drop the transfer at 98% completion or something as it's done before from my experience. I could split up the file with 7-zip or something perhaps making it more msn friendly... oh wait, installing 7-zip would be kind of a quantum leap for the other person... I'll think of something :)

just run an FTP server on it

when they say "You cant run an FTP server on this connection" what they mean is you cant turn it into a download server and charge people for downloading your porn.

If they've got a generic terms in their T&Cs that states "no servers" its dead easy to shut you off.

They're not after mr average getting a file from his PC to a mates or whatever. They're just after stopping people using a home connection for business use.
 
If you know this person then can you not just burn it to disc and post it?

Use winrar and mutli rar zip it into files, then you can send it via an FTP or what ever and let it do it in bits and bobs, then it wont matter too much!
