FTTC and Exchange Question

I am currently on BE Pro but i only get 10mbit/1.5mbit where i should be able to get 24mbit/2mbit. I have optimised the adsl routers configuration via telnet based on the advice from BE user community and that got me 1 extra mbit. They said that i should dial a number and if i hear anything on the line then that means the line has noise and i should contact BT. I phone the number did not hear anything. I am literally down the road from the exchange.

My question is, my local exchange is hornchuch and it is fttc ready with 28mbit/6mbit speeds available BT website says. Is it BT that is restricting bandwidth on adsl2 lines to try and get people to move over to the fttc service? I don't understand how an exchange could be offering higher speeds but my line syncs at 11 or 10mbit. I do not think there is a problem with my line and i am using the test socket so it is not an internal wiring problem. BE washed their hands of it and blamed BT. The be user community said that i should phone BT and say that i have noise on the line even if i don't and bt engineer will come and do their "magic" and i will then sync at a faster speed. Why do i have to call bt to increase my sync speed, why is it not already syncing at, at least 16mbit/2mbit ? I just hate phoning BT and speaking to an indian call center for 1 hour to try and get them to send an engineer while he asks what lights i have on my router etc.

Anyone have any advice how i can quick start the process and just get my speed increased without jumping through BT hoops.

Also are there any FTTC service providers other than BT yet, any FTTC service providers that do not have a 18 month contract yet, and will there ever be ?

If you ring BT and get put through to India ask specifically to speak to someone in 'English Tech Support' they will be offish and try and get out of it but stick to your guns and you will get to speak to someone usefull who won't give you the scripted nonsense the Indian call centres do. I was given this advice by BT's customer complaints department after an issue with my broadband was terribly handled by India and I have used it with success a couple of times since.

BT isn't restricting your ADSL2+ speed. You're probably too far from the exchange to sync at a higher rate.

You'll probably get 40/10 from FTTC. Don't go with Infinity. ;)

He's with Be* and is used to an unshaped service and can probably max out his line 24/7. He won't be able to do that on Infinity.

"unlimited weekend offpeak"

No thanks! I had to leave ADSL24 due to packet loss experienced during the "unlimited weekend offpeak". :o

Hardly their fault though, is it?

Blame the contention at your exchange.

It had nothing to do with congestion at my exchange. It isn't possible to offer "unlimited" bandwidth on a BT product unless it is being offered for £££.
