I am going to view a house next week and when I done a checker for FTTC in the area it says the cabinet is full and it will be on a queue system. I really do not want normal broadband as the max download speed is 0.8mb where the house is unless its fibre so just wondering how long you recon it could take to actually get a fibre order in? could it take a while?
 
Why will they not install another cabinet though do BT not tend to do this ?

They're concentrating on building new cabinets for people who don't have fibre rather than updating existing cabinets with more capacity.

Some providers may allow you to add yourself to the wait list but I don't know of any. Most will just say it's not available to order. Does the person staying there at the moment have Fibre?
 
Our local cabinet has been full for 18 months and is only being fixed with a new cabinet being installed in March next year. It's meant no new fibre connection for my neighbours for over two years (hopefully for them) so think carefully.
 
There's no official way to judge demand on a full cabinet as not all ISPs operate a waiting list, but it is Openreach policy to upgrade full cabinets (why wouldn't it be - the expensive part is done and it brings in extra revenue). Your ISP is able to find out why the cabinet is full and hasn't been upgraded, but the main 'consumer' providers aren't particularly interested in the effort involved in doing this.
 
I think I'm right in saying that once a cabinet becomes full, if you're on fibre you cannot even safely swap ISP's.
So for example you're on Sky at a full cabinet and you see an excellent BT offer. You make the swap and in effect you can get your slot stolen as you attempt to move from one to the other.
 
There's a migration product now that isn't a cease/reprovide, so you should be fine to move provider in that way.
 
I have switched recently (last month) from Sky to BT no issue (fibre to fibre).

This was when my cab said it was full constantly, meaning I couldn't order for a few weeks beforehand. Except 1 random day it said it wasn't, even though had no new cab installed... The day after I ordered, said the cab was full again. But 2 weeks later my migration went through without a hitch.

In certain cases a new line card can be added, but I doubt that happened in your case.
 
We had a cabinet showing as full but apparently a few ports were broken on one of the line cards and once open reach swapped out the line card it was showing as available again. Probably Kelly's busting up the line cards when they were doing a lot of the fibre installs.
 
Ah cool - info to pass to my boss.
He was effectively told he couldn't migrate because he is on a full cabinet. I'll let him know he should be able to.

I'm in the middle of a similar issue with my girlfriend's new house. A few weeks before moving, I signed her up for BT I1, we got an activation date of 26th September, the day before we were due to move in, perfect.

Moved in, activation date passed, nothing. Left it a few days as we were too busy to worry about internet. Then went onto the BT live chat, after about 45 minutes the woman I was talking to found out from BTO that there was a 'congestion problem' in the cabinet, and wasn't a lot more helpful than that. So I did some research on the issue and found it's due to the cabinet being filled to capacity. Did the line check and it came up saying it's in a queue.

Several live chats and calls to BT later, it seems BTO have been out to the cabinet last Friday and today, and the online tracking now shows an activation date of tomorrow. So I am assuming they have fitted a new line card to the existing cab. It appears a lot of the footpath has been dug up around it too, so god knows what they are doing.

So I have everything crossed that it finally goes live tomorrow.

I am going to view the house on wednesday obviously it would be a 6 month contract at least and normal broadband is max 0.8mb at the house :/ I cannot live with that Id loose the plot ha!
So I might go view the house and then if I wanna go ahead I will ring bt up but I keep checking every day and it keep saying its full :/

I know that when we were looking to move many years ago broadband was a factor.
We found a house we liked and confirmed ADSL status. I ran tests from numerous business phone numbers I could find in the area to confirm the exchange was offering good performance.

Over the years we got ADSL MAX quickly, fibre roll-out was quite prompt too and I currently get around 74mb/18mb which obviously I'm happy about.

But yer - couldn't go for a house where there isn't good broadband infrastructure.
 
Checked today and it says the area is available to purchase FTTC :D
But going to look at the house tomorrow... my luck ill sign all the paperwork go to order it and it will not be available ha! Might just look for one to Rent with Virgin Media :D
