FTTx (Fiber-to-the-x) is a generic term for any network architecture that uses optical fiber to replace all or part of the usual copper local loop.
 
That thread is about BT / Wholesale FTTC though. There are other projects around the country that don't rely on BT (e.g. Digital Region or IFNL).

[Edit] There's actually very little public knowledge about companies that operate independantly from BT
