A few ATI partners have confirmed that they are almost done with their GDDR4 R680 design. Radeon HD 3870 X2 cards are currently selling for around €400, but they are all based on slower DDR3 memory clocked at 1800MHz for the reference cards.

This card should be just a bit more expensive and it should launch in a few weeks, but we don’t expect any significant speed jumps with the new DDR4 card.

The point is, ATI can do it and the partners want it, so they will definitely follow up with new refreshed card.

Fudzilla seem to have been surprisingly accurate of late, or is it just that speculation about products is low now the 3870x2 is out?

good news in that ddr4 should bring down the power consumption of the card a bit. and since there is a lot of memory chips on the card it could add up to more than a couple of watts reduction in power consumption.

That's precisely what I'm thinking :) The disadvantage though is that they will -most likely- charge a premium for the ddr4 version like an xtx, with little real gain.

What would be nice would be a 2gb version... not that it really will make that much difference BUT, given the resolution you are likely to be using these at with AA/AF/HDR turned on, 1gb per gpu would probably make a difference.

WTF does that have to do with the topic of the post? trolling??

aye, was a bit random! Maybe he posted in the wrong section?

I note the cheapest X2 in stock is a penny under £270 at the moment, I think good on ATI for releasing at this price point also bearing in mind they will fall ~10% a week or so after launch as well.

Depends, if the new driver release increases performance significantly, they might go back up! lol

Only thing bringing them down are the -relatively speaking- cheap GTX and GTS 512mb out there.

Thanks to ATI we have now cheaper and much faster cards; expect 8800 gtx and ultra dropping their price 10-20% soon :p

Heck yeah! I cannot complain as I essentially have a 2900xt but with UVD, 10.1, sm4.1 and cooler/quieter/more efficient and all for £100 less than it used to be!

It forced Nvidia to bring out cheaper cards and has kinda shifted the whole market. I for one am not complaining :)
