I just worked out the fuel economy of my Rover based on 700miles of motoring.
It's a 1.4 8v.

Mixture of motorway and town driving. About 35% motorway.

29.4MPG

Would you say this is about right and the car is mechanically OK?

Cheers,

Chris

I have been driving a little heavy footed to be honest so perhaps that's why it is <30mpg.

My Honda is a thirsty car. My figures are, when I last worked it out, as I keep an eye on mine to ensure I'm not over spending on fuel.

Set trip computer to 0, and filled up.

£45.60 @ 89.9p. Did 452 miles on that same tank, from full to almost empty, so empty if I'd left it any longer I would have been pushing.

This works out to 40.51 miles to a gallon. Honda Accord 2.0 sport. Most of this was driving from home to work, I do that four times a day as I travel from home to work, then back to home in my Lunch break and then back again. Also did some motorway miles as well.

I do around 800 miles a month, and costs on average £90 in fuel. Sometimes I do more miles, and I never seem to spend more then £110. Either I drive sensibly or I'm frugal with my fuel..

No its broke! the head gasket has gone! :o Omfgz! :p

Seriously, if your driving it heavy footed, there is your problem! My 214 was fairly heavy on fuel too though!

Trust you to post that :p

As for economy, my worst economy has been around 28, where I got 200 miles to £30 of Optimax

Been using good ol' regular Shell unleaded and am back up to around 35mpg... that's with some spirited driving too.

Well, that was last week, when I used the motorway every day.

Since moving house over the weekend, I live too close to work to consider the motorway, so we'll see how my economy suffers.

Sounds a touch low to me. I struggle to get my 8v 1.4 306 to drop much below 40mpg even if i'm giving it stick (ie most of the time)... then again the Rover 1.4 puts out 25% more power than my car.

Sounds about right to me if you are revving it a bit, my old 214 was a touch worse but was the 16v version so more powerful :)

small under powered engine and big ish car? My metro with the 1.4 8V got 38-39mpg all the time, but a lot of others with 1.4 8V metros always complained about the 30mpg as well !

I got similar or less than that when I had a 1.4 Escort. It's just so slow that you'll find yourself ragging it to make any decent progress hence the poor economy.

I drove my Rover 214 SEi 16v like it idled at 5000rpm on ESSO 95RON and averaged 40mpg with some rush-hour traffic but 75% carriageway driving.

to be honest Optimax is a waste of money in a rover, as it doesn't have a knock sensor so cant adjust the timing to the higher octane in Optimax

My main reason for using Optimax was to make use of the detergents in the petrol, not to look for any "OMGZ, 10 MILLION MORE HORSE POWER" :D

But seeing as how my economy was about as good as running on urine, I think I'll give it a miss in future. Weird as I used to get 120 miles to a tenner on Optimax. I think this CTS sensor really needs replacing.
