looking to replace my nikon 5700 that i have had for awile now and am looking at the above camera, just wondering what peoples thoughts are with it ie picture quility, lens, zoom and gerenal use, am taking it on my hols soon and would really like some help, i have looked at a lot of reviews for it and some say its the best camera before you go to dslr and others say its ok but not worth it if you have an older model fuji like the 9000 :)

I bought the s9600 around 1 month ago now, not had too many chances to get out with it and the weather hasnt been that good recently.

Camera is a nice weight, it looks better in the flesh than it does on the web.

Obviously the amount of options you have with various settings will be a bit of a learning curve, the 160 page manual is a hint of what you can expect.

Still, I chose it over a DSLR like the D40 as I wanted video, and at the moment I didnt want the hassle and expense of different lenses.

To begin with I thought that the pictures taken with it werent that good, but I suspect its probably me using the wrong settings. I'm still getting to grips with it now, but I do like the control you can have over pictures compared to a point and shoot.

The zoom is great, although I am thinking of getting a telephoto lens at some point, mainly after having a go at the eclipse at the weekend, which it did pretty well at capturing considering.

Battery life initially sucked with normal AA batteries, but since buying some 2500/2700 nimh ones I have taken well over 300 pics and still not had the battery light blink, so they are a worthwhile investment.

Continuous shooting could be a bit faster, its only 1.1fps, but realistically you wont need it that often.

RAW mode is useful, but the supplied software is a bit of a pain to use, but in saying that it was one of the reasons I chose this camera over a Canon S3.

Picture quality is pretty good, although when at 1:1 on the screen it can sometimes look a bit grainy, but unless you really need a 100% crop of a small object etc then its not that bad.

I've bought some filters for the camera, having the ability to add these on is a nice bonus, allowing you to take some shots that you might not otherwise be able to, or that might not come out as well.

Overall I'm pretty happy with it, and I am sure once Summer comes around and things start to look a bit more interesting then I will be out a lot more.

I mainly bought it to learn a bit about photography and try a few things out, but I'm allready constantly trying to find interesting places to go to use the camera on.

I think in the future I will most likely get a DSLR, but until then this is allowing me to try different things out and get out the house more.

The only other camera I would suggest is the Canon S3 IS, but it all depends on personal choice and whether 1 camera suits you more than the other.

For the money I think the s9600 is a good camera, and being able to add on bits and pieces like filters etc is a definite plus.

Bit of a long post but you asked for it :D

PS, it certainly makes you feel more manly when you get it out at parties and everyone else has their little compacts :p (not that I am using it to compensate for other areas...)

thanks for that m8, i alreay have a dslr (canon 350d) and the reason i want to replace my nikon is so i dont have to take my slr with all its lens where as with the fuji its got the same range as the biggest lens i have for the slr (300mm) and its an all in one the batterys are a given really as most people dont relise that when your flick through all the pics you have taken every 10 mins ( trust me my sister does it and complains about the batterys not lasting long lol ) but yea i like the look of the s3 is but like you said i like useing raw on some shots that need it so its nice to have the option :) :D

ps got any links to your lunar shots :)

The problem i have with the S9600 is the lack of IS, which is where the Canon comes in. If you're going to have a camera with a lens of that capability then IS will most certainly come in handy. The S3 also has a faster continuous drive, though as mentioned, no support for RAW, though I'd like to take the opportunity to ask if lack of RAW is really that important if the pictures taken are uncompressed in any case.

Some pics I uploaded for here, been reduced in size but IIRC the moon shots are 100% crop. BTW I am pretty sure someone with more experience than me could have got better shots, so dont imagine that these are the best this camera can do.

Lack of IS can sometimes be a problem, but at the end of the day its not too bad, I have a tripod anyway so its not that much of a problem.

Its really down to the features you want, the Canon is better in some respects, but then the Fuji is in others. You just have to weigh up the differences and choose what is more important to you.

digital photographers have gone with out IS for a long time i have never used it or need it so not really bothered that the fuji doesnt have it :)

well the place where as was going to get the s9600 has got no stock for a couple of months they gave a lame reason about not selling very well so i could be going for the s3 after all :p

scratch the above comment am waiting till april for these to be released babys Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H9 and DSC-H7

talk about bringing a dead thread back :p

check the dpreview review section ;) they're both in there now. quality drops a lot at any ISO over 200 according to the reviews. the Fuji is probably better as you've got fewer pixels on a bigger (i think) sensor.
stick to 6mp of the 6500 - you dont need anymore. :)

If you can't source the 9600 consider the 6500.

Same lens, same sensor and processor I believe and it's also had some storming reviews. It's £100 cheaper but obviously does lack some features that the 9600 has. Plus it's 6.3mp instead of 9mp not that that would make much difference unless you're into printing massive pictures!

S9500 owner. Don't use it too often anymore. But it still goes with out with me.

Few example shots form it - various sizes.

S9500 is a very capable camera. Not too hot in low light, but can work.
ISO400 or above is ok for smaller images.

ISO80-200 is fine for larger images.

was just thinking that lol any way i didnt get the sony camera as the reviews for them where just not good :( sony could have done so much more with it if they had gotten a bigger sensor instead of using the same size as the h2/h5 and increasing the pixels on it, i went for the panasonic fz50 and am so glad i did :p

Lots of images....

Would you say this camera can perform quite well in fast action photography?

Thanks allot, you have some really nice photos. Liking the dragonfly.

Difficult to say. Never really had to do any. I was very lucky on the Lancaster. It flew over and I got 2 shots off in 'continous' mode and was very lucky to get that shot.

Your timing would have to be spot on as it's roughly 1 shot every 7 seconds in RAW and 1.1 fps in JPEG. Focussing isn't bad, but I'd still set it to single focus instead of continous focus, focus on a point and then track the movement and shoot at that point.

Tried a bit at Duxford recently, got a couple, but the Spit was too far away to get any good shots. Plus no practice.

Thanks. They're some of my favourites. If I can make money with the S9500 then anyone can. ;)

The aperture range of the S9600 is listed at F2.8 - F4.9; isn't that a bit pants? I'm used to F2.0 to F8 on my Canon G3.
