FUJITSU SIEMENS AMILO Laptops ?

Overall not bad, they sell a lot into big business and the public sector so they are kinda middle of the road in my opinion. Certainly nothing overtly wrong with them.

We've got 3 of them at work and they have all been bullet proof in terms of reliability. The one thing that impressed me was the lack of bloatware on the standard install.

I have an Amilo Pro. Its pretty sweet, 1.6 core duo, 2gb ram, but its an out and out business laptop. Plain styling, although it still looks okay.

As already mentioned, the install is awesome. Being business-y I guess, mine came with XP Pro and nothing else. Only the specific drivers were installed, and no third-party at all. Woo!

Edit: The screen is pretty good. Its not as bright as my Hitachi tft, but they are known for being super bright, so that could be the issue rather than the laptop. I used it for six months exclusively and never noted an issue with the screen or its performance.

If its the same one, id be happy to provide pics, etc.

Friend made the mistake of getting a Packard Bell from a well known highstreet chain and it had about 3gigs of bloatware inc stuff thats already free like google toolbar :D

The newer gen might be better, but my old Amilo D8120 P4 3.2Ghz failed within 3 months of use. It ran way too hot

Hi, I have an Amillo 1667G with the athlon64 4000 cpu. It's just over a year old now and has been back for repairs twice. I've had two new motherboards and graphics cards fitted. Service was good, I received my repaired laptop back in just over a week. Apart from those two instances i'm quite happy with the machine as a whole.

Hi,

I've just picked up an Amilo 1718. Saw it via Tesco for £498 then found the next model up at a local department store for £549. Got them to price match so in the end got the better model for £478 :) Plus, they gave me a 2 year guarantee.

So a good deal for a Dual 1.8, 2Gb 160Gb HD. Had it a week now and it's been fine. Took me a while to get the wireless and assorted buttons working under Ubuntu but running now. Battery life is not stellar (2hrs) but it's not a priority for me.

So, so far, very pleased.

Cheers

Andy

I've got a 4/5year old Amilo with 2.8ghz p4 512mb ram (upgraded to 1gb).

Still going strong its like a rock. Only thing i had was the HDD fail 6months ago - not bad to a computer thats on 24/7.

one note, we have about 10 Fujitsu Siemens laptops here at work, everything about these laptops are good except the power adapter socket. On two laptops on the power socket the needle/pin has broken off, making the laptops useless as you can't charge the laptop as these laptops we have have no docking station ports. And this is not covered by the warranty

Do they have a switch / button to turn off the wireless ?
Mine does yes mate,

nice build quility, solid. Battery life is nothing to go crazy about - so bear that in mind if you need more than 2hours without mains.

other than that lovely piece of kit and as said the install is really nice. no nonsense :) just drivers and windows.. i think mine came with Nero or something like that as well but thats about it.

From the reviews the latest models seem to blow the hot air out from the right hand side with the DVD-RW on the left side. That must be a pain to use a normal mouse with hot air blowing on you hand.

I've had an AMILO M3438G for coming up to 2 years now and can't fault it. Never had a problem with it although a friend who had one had to send his back after 6 months but service was excellent.

I used to think the screen was awesome but since getting a Dell 24" monitor I'm not so sure but, saying that I've been playing Far Cry and WoW on for most of the time without any problems and the onboard sound is pretty decent too. All in all build quality is great imo.

Mine has a wireless on/off button and the same configuration as above in terms of DVD and exhaust although I've never really noticed it blowing on my hand when in use. Also has an on/off button for the touchpad which I couldn't live without and came with almost zero bloatware. Battery life isn't great at 2 hours but you can squeeze more out if you use the fan button to turn the fan usage right down.

Ive not had an issue with hot air when using a mouse. Its so rarely my laptop spins up to full anyway, particually on a desk where you'd use a mouse as the vents on the base are then clear. And DVD on the left means you dont have to move your mouse/mousemat to put a disc in.
