Full Anti-aliasing?

Is there any card (Single GPU) which can run full Anti-aliasing and play smoothly in todays technology?

Is Anti-aliasing all that? or is it overrated?

Whats your thoughts and opinions?
 
I'm using AA in 1920x1200 on my GTX 460, and there's cards out there a lot faster than the GTX 460...
 
No. There are games which even two gtx 480 can't play at 4xaa never mind max aa.

Although it depends on what res you are playing.

Obviously at 1024 x 768 there are planty single cards which can run at max 32xaa or 24xaa ;)
 
AA is essential to image quality, but sadly it's the first thing to turn-off when extra performance is needed.

I agree it helps, but as the natural resolution of the screen increases the less need for aa.

At 1920 x1080 I see little need for anything more than 2x.

I suspect that as screen resolution increases (who knows when that will happen we have had 1920 x 1440 and beyong on crts for about 10 years) a point will be reached where jaggies just cannot be seen due to the high pixel density.

Personally I believe af is more essental to image quality then aa.

Running without af makes images look flat and layered (try a racing game like tmnu as an example of how crappy the track will look with af off).

I know, as long as there's some AA (usually 2x) then i'm not really fussed beyond there. I do play at 1440x900 though...
 
I use AA with some games, not others.

Battlefield 2 - 8x and all is pretty.

FSX - 4x any more makes it look / run worse.

FS2004 - 8x and all is pretty.

BFBC2 - No AA support iirc due to me running XP yet it looks beautiful with barely any noticable "jaggles"

I find 4XAA the sweet sport in most games & you also got to take the resolution X screen size into account, not just the res.
Sometimes i go the full x16AA.

i used to think that aa didnt make much of a difference the higher the res went because of the pixel density, i have a dell 30" running at 2560 x 1600, and i recently bought 2 x gtx 480's, and like said above in racing games you really can see the difference even at such a high res, which surprised me, i recently went to a lan party with 98 pcs there, and its amazing how many people come up and say how much better it looks with a large screen and aa high.

dazzerd said there's a need for AF (Anisotropic Filtering FYI) in racing games, not AA (AntiAliasing). He also said that 2xAA is enough for him at 1080p.

Personally I opt for 4xAA in most games (8x in the older titles). Found it to be the most balanced performance/quality setting. There's more to AA though, there are many types and techniques of applying it, I just use the standard without playing with CCC, rather set it in the game. Agreed that playing at higher resolution means lesser need for AA if the game sports high resolution textures.
 
At 30" you're not going to notice unless you stop and have a gander especially when playing fast paced action games. It's nice to have for slower paced games, but those tend not to require bucket loads of gpu power.

Problem with AA is lack of fullscreen AA unless you go Super Sampling which really make the gpu choke. MSAA only aliases polygons and non polygon objects remain jaggy like leaves and fences, which kind of defeats the purpose of AA. The jaggies remain! So unless SSAA becomes the standard. 60+ fps is where I want to be.
 
tried full AA at native resolution once in crysis DX10 and got 1! frame/second :rolleyes: did look the part though! :D
 
Big difference in Mass Effect 2 between MSAA and CSAA. Looks much nicer and still runs very well using 4xCSAA.

the crazy thing is, its perfectly playable with edge AA enabled, so obviously in crysis AA is a huge performance sinkhole! don't use it! though in COD: MW using any amount of AA seemed to make no difference to performance to speak of, anyone else notice that?
