Full Fibre Speed issue

Just got 1gbps internet with Aquiss but not getting anywhere near that speed.

Using a Nighthawk R8000 router, which I thought would probably be the problem, but on connecting direct to the ONT I am still only getting 300-350 download. BT Wholesale have been out and they say the ONT is getting 980 download.

Network adapter is a gigabit card and set to 1 gbps Full Duplex.

Using the router I am getting around 280 on a cable, and 250 wifi. All cables are Cat 6.

I am not that clued up with networking etc so in my head, even if I buy a new router, if the the laptop is only getting 300-350 direct from the ONT, the new router isn't really going to change anything? BT have basically shrugged their shoulders and said we measure 980 at the ONT, so that must be right.

Openreach confirm ONT is full speed and you’re not getting it over the net sounds like Aquiss or possibly OR have some congestion in your area.

OR are half right it’s not them. I would be pushing heavily on Aquiss to investigate their network.

What’s your MTU set at?

If the light levels are good and the ONT is receiving full speed, the issue is quite possibly the device itself. How powerful is the laptop, and what and how are you testing speeds? I'm assuming you're on Windows, so have you tried the Ookla Speedtest app itself, rather than via a browser? It could well be the device is just not capable of saturating gigabit, or browser settings, or a Windows issue or something else. Try outside of a browser using the app first, and if that doesn't help, try booting a Linux live USB and testing from that. This will rule out any Windows issues. Don't bother testing WiFi, just wired (and try a different cable too).

We had a thread recently where someone wasn't getting the speed they were expecting either, turns out they were using a USB Network card and the issue was there. You mentioned a Gigabit Network Card, can you confirm what make and model it is and how it is connected to your computer?

We have and I'm fully aware of the case, hence it's gone for appointment for things to be checked off network.

For disclosure, our ENNIs with BTW are peaking at 27% usage, combined. BTW have also checked their handover VLANS, which are all operating at Green levels (ie: capacity is fine).

I've only been with Aquiss for a short while, but I have to say that they have been the most responsive provider I can remember for a very long time.

It's the Realtek Gbe, which is a PCI connected card. Everything I can find about this adapter says it's gigabit.

You can apparently run a speed test on the router using the app, what numbers does that give you?

Do you only have this one laptop as a wired device to test on? What is the model of the laptop?

The Nighthawk app gives me similar numbers.

The laptop is a HP Omen 17-ck. I have a 2015 MBP or my work laptop which is a Dell, but that will connect via a VPN as that is how our IT dept has set our laptops up. Won't be able to get to any settings etc on that one.

Go to Realtek site, get their latest drivers, in addition test in fill power mode on the laptop.

Edit - h just saw that your router reports bad speed before it gets to your laptop, maybe try a different cable to ONT.

Nice. Excellent that you are being dolligent with this. I have had similar involvement with a provider before and it helps to ensure all the I's are dotted and T's are crossed.

Please check and lower your MTU if you haven't already. On your router change it to 1480 and see if it improves.

I had it once with a fibre provider, done loads of connections and mtu never a problem, this one particular connection needed it lower.

Worth a Hail Mary shot.
