I have a pair of Wharfdale Modus Cubes in my Kitchen powered of a TA2024 based solid state amp. I've been pretty happy with the sound in general but the speakers being a single cone design are a bit muddy and don't necesarily reproduce all the detail that the amp puts out. I was wondering if there was any better similar sized full ranged speakers I could use in place of the Wharfdales that would give me a more detailed sound without busting a huge hole in my pocket! I'm happy to go second hand but don't really want to go beyond £50-£100.

For small compact speakers like that I think you have a fairly limited selection, The Modus which you already have, Acoustic Energy make the Aego T which are sold single (so you would need 2), Mission M Cubes (also sold single), There are also Modus Supercubes which are like the Modus but have been made 2 way by adding a small tweeter.

They are all between £70-100 each (so 140-200 for a pair) on the bargain store websites, but you could look second hand to get them cheaper.

if it's in your kitchen you'll get reflections and interference nodes that will mess with the sound quality regardless of how good the speakers are. i'm not convinced that additional spending will see considerable results.
