Which system is best for high end gaming - the main diff being the processors and GPUs

I'd definitely consider building it yourself. ITs generally not that difficult and there are lots of guides to help. Also the folks here are pretty good at offerring advice (whether you want it or not ) too

I think saying the i7 is the better is a little too easy. Yes the processing power is greater than the X4 phenom, but the phenom setup has 8GB memory (ok, not as fast as the i7, but still more than 2x more) and has a better graphic card and and additional 1TB hard drive space.

I'd agree with most people as say build your own, you can merge to best of both to make a better one for similar pricing.

but both the X4 phenom and quad core intel are old sockets, how can you advise someone to spend 1500 on a dead socket with no potential upgrade path????
