Had an email from Funcom the other day inviting me to participate in the BETA testing.

I must admit i did kind of smile considering i cancelled my Age of Conan account due to their complete incompetence as a developer and made them fully aware of my reasons for doing so, yet still get an invite.

Anyway i thought i would humour them and try it out. Played a couple of games and it is pretty fun, just concerned it is lacking the depth to keep me interested.

It's similar to DOTA if you've played that, i've not had the pleasure but my friend tells me it is very similar.

I quite enjoyed it for the 15 mins i spent playing it and could be a good game to just pick up and play for a while and not have to spend several hours getting your character geared up etc like most of these types of games.

Any other opinions?

Lol you think they remembered you ranting at their game? 1000's told em it was poo.

Sounds ok, I'll check it out.

It was a little bit different actually.

They emailed me after i had cancelled my account to ask me if i minded answering some questions about why i cancelled. Wasn't an automated form like you get on the actual account page. I think they emailed me because of what i put on there lol.

As i pretty much told them in no uncertain terms i'd never be buying anything from them again, ever, im suprised they invited me to test their new game!

Usually these beta keys are somewhat limited and best served on players who perhaps appreciate their products and would be willing to give them some feedback?

But yeah you should check it out if you like that sort of game, seems decent fun and not too complicated!

Considering how far from being finished AoC was on release I am a bit worried they have managed to make another MMO in like 2 years?

But still I did enjoy some parts of AoC and it makes sense to use the engine before it goes out of date. In fact it was probably a little too grood graphics for it's time.

Play Beta then it is free. Worth a try, let us know.

I completely agree regarding AOC. It was such a good game potentially, just let down by the developers.

That's why i got so annoyed at them i think lol.

But no, this one isnt an MMO i think and it's definitely not the same engine. There's no character building, theres 16 classes and all of them have set skills, i think they get 6 each and all pretty similar, just slightly different to cater for different characters.

There's no world either from what i can tell, just a lobby type system when u make games, like diablo 2. Also the graphics arn't too much better than diablo 2 to give you an idea lol.

I think it's just something that they're trying to make a 'fun game'. Perhaps they've realised they were way too ambitious with Conan and are trying the simple approach - check out the website if you want more info etc.

Funcom are quite frankly a mess.

I still play Anarchy Online casually for fun but it's so full of bull it's unreal. Stuff left unfixed for years. Bad mechanics, bad design decisions...just bad generally.

I never even played a Funcom game and I've got a beta key. I signed up for the SoC trial. But I never got around to playing it. Won't bother with this either, so email my trust if you want my key.

Anarchy Online is now free. Great game? No where near a great game. If you were unlucky enough to play it on release with the lovely 'stuck in a shop' for several days, lag, lag and more lag, poor quests, etc. and you still liked it then no wonder devs are producing the crap that is currently released.

AoC was just as bad - though why an MMO would ever use instancing to that degree is mad - it's an MMO when you run into town you want to see other people running around and doing stuff and make it have a feel of a world. Again, on release, the promised DX10, etc, etc. was pushed back further and further.

Basically every game I've ever seen from FunCom has not been fit for release. I had a look at this beta but I won't be buying another FunCom game.

And yet today AoC is one of the best MMO's there are out there. It's all well and good lamenting Funcoms failures but AoC certainly isn't one of them, as long as you don't count it's first year :p

Funcom are just the publisher for this; the developer is Stunlock Studios...game is fun for a quick blast but can't find a long term future with it...

Best by what measure? It certainly isn't the amount of people playing it - success is measured by the amount of people playing it and the amount of revenue it's generated which can be put back into the game. Even though it annoys me to hell there's nothing anywhere near as popular as WoW.

You say don't count the first year? Surely, when a game is released, it has to be judged at that point in time. Hell it basically was laughing in the face of all the people who had bought it. Just because it finally got around to fixing the bugs on a year after release, adding DX10 (when DX11 was out) and then adding a few things doesn't mean its any good. The game was distinctly average anyway and it's main selling point was that it was aimed at adults.

They did the same with Anarchy Online - they killed the player base in the first month - surely they should realise by now that they should not release a game until it's actually ready.

Other failures I can think of is most negative feedback in the forums was removed (even constructive criticism), you couldn't post unless you had an in game account, there MD / CEO resigned, they had to lay of staff, charging people for a fast 'trial' client download (which was slow anyway), P2Ping the client unless you paid, etc.

There's lots more to it than the above but I'm taking this off topic completley.

It was a great game, I was one of those few who managed to avoid a lot of those problems, not to mention there weren't that many MMOs on the market that could do the job better. Once they were sorted, (which wasn't that long) it was a great game.

It has what a lot of MMO's lack today, the ability to put a lot more time into having a better character, twinking to the extreme. In fact I can't think of one other game that has it's complexity for twinking a character.
I won't deny hating a lot of things/moments during the past 9 years, but over all it's been good.
But it isn't newbie friendly, it's complexity is second to eve out of all the game's I've played. But let's not forget it is 9 years old.

Asherons Call
Everquest
UO
DAOC

Were all around when it went live. It had a market to catch up. I still didn't find the complexity of it that hard - it was hardly like Asherons Call where by you had skill points and could actually be an individual rather than selecting a skill and being like everyone else out there.

If I'm honest that's my main bug-bear with modern MMO's. They treat everyone like they're 6 years old - I'd rather put a point in run and visible see my character running faster or a point in strength and being able to carry more. Not like todays MMO's whereby you don't really have that choice.
