Like the idea but the whites are a bit blown out, which is a shame. Too much flash is the culprit here - also giving the large shadow in the second picture. Does your camera have a flash exposure compensation function that you can play with? You can also look at making some home-made reflectors (i.e. tin foil) to get some natural lighting from below.
 
I've got kazillions of shrOOm photos! The key is to take a 3 foot by 3 foot board covered with silver foil (shiney side crumpled then flattened if you like then stuck on the board) to reflect natural light into places like this. ShrOOms like to be in the shade ya see and its awkward and generally fruitless to bother with a flash!
