Fusion Drives

Hi

What you guys think of the Fusion drive in the iMac.

Was looking at them today as ready to upgrade my 2010 iMac but not too sure wether to or not

I know we can get them with SSD put in at cost but is it worth it when I be storing all my photos on a thunderbolt drive

I created one out of the Apple supplied SSD and a much larger aftermarket mechanical HDD (see here) and I'm very pleased I did.

I have a 2Tb Fusion drive in my 27"iMac and really like it.

Are apps like LR load up fast like 4 secs? Also boot up time?

Dont have LR installed right now but Aperture and most other Apps load in like 2-3 seconds.

Boot up takes less than 30 secs to the password screen but that's a rough guess as I have never timed it but I will next time and post back, I usually just switch it on as I walk past to the kitchen to turn the kettle on.

Ok timed it this morning.

From hitting the power button to reaching the password entry screen was exactly 13seconds.

I don't have anywhere near that sort of load time for Photoshop and Muse but I don't use them very often so I can hear the mechanical drive thrashing as they load. The more you use something, the more the system realises that and moves it to the SSD.
