New TVs with built in DTV tuners, will these be HD compatible when/if freeview starts to transmit some HD content. Or will we all need to fork out for new TVs/digiboxes in maybe 2010 when freeview starts transmitting HDTV?

Thats what i thought, so are there any TVs that have upgradable tuners? As If i spend a grand on a tv, i want it to last 5 years.

I haven't heard of any upgradeable tvs, so I guess the only option is to buy an HD-freeview box when they come available, in the same way that many people have upgraded their analogue televisions to digital

Havent heard anything about freeview going HD, I guess its mostly dependent on if / when the BBC start to transmit it by themselves ( not in conjunction with Sky which I believe is initial plan)

I was under the impression they would have enough bandwidth to transmit a few HD channels once all the analogue gets turned off, i.e. about 2010.

it will happen eventually but it depends how popular other HD stuff turns out to be. bbc is publicly funded so can only go with it if the demand is there and its deemed necessary

Personally I think it will go MPEG 4 before HD.

And I cannot see it going MPEG 4 anytime soon.

Maybe they will release HD in MPEG 4 and everything else at MPEG 2
