Hi All,

I am looking to upgrade my system this year at some point which will include:

  • GFX cards - replacing both mine
  • PSU - depending on what cards I get
  • RAM - getting more, and better hardware

But will also need to include:
  • Mobo
  • CPU
  • Possible replacement cooler if I cant find my Intel adapters

If AMD don't use the current socket. If they don't I am thinking of going for one of the more recent Intel CPU's (my wallet hurts already) lol

I was wondering when the new AMD CPU's appear, if they will still continue to use AM3+ sockets or move on from there?

Thanks

Socket AM4 is the next Desktop platform for AMD's Zen derived CPU's and APU's and will support both.
AM3+ will not support the new Proccessors.

What CPU have you got now OP? If it's an old Bulldozer then you might get by with a beefier CPU upgrade for the moment.

Also why are you upgrading? If gaming, what games and screen res? What GPUs were you thinking and what's the total budget?

A Z97 mobo with something like a 4690K won't set you back much more than an AMD system, but you get more performance at less power use.

Worth going to Intel atm they are so far ahead and pricing isn't that bad tbh.

Look at AMD again later next year when they finally have some new stuff.

£200 for a i5 4690k is obscene. I would call that extremely bad. I paid £159.99 for mine and even then I thought that the price wasn't that good. If I was looking to build a pc right now I really do not know which way I would go. Intel has the performance but the prices are ridiculous. For the price of a 4690k you could get a 8320 and a motherboard. Yes they are behind on performance but would it really be noticeable?

It matters to me as I would have saved a big chunk of money and got a pc with decent performance for a reasonable price. Why would I care if it's not noticeable? So you would spend a hell of a lot more money on a Intel setup for a few more fps? Intel's current prices are disgracefull and are only going to get worse when Skylake is launched.

First gen i5 was much much cheaper than they are now. I only paid £125 for a i5 760. Since then prices have increased dramatically.

I'm in the same conundrum at the moment, I want a 4690k but I don't want to pay silly money for it, especially when it's selling for £140 in the states, so I think £160 across here is more realistic.

The market has gone a bit mental over here lately, must be loads of people building pcs for big games being released.

Intel prices have shot up in the last 4 months. I only paid £220 for my 4790k there £280 now and nothing has changed but they got older and closer to end of life.

How does that even work?

You get what you pay for, end of story. I was on AMD for years before switching to a 4790k. AMDs are decent but don't kid yourself that you won't notice a difference. That depends on many factors and a lot of modern games clearly favour Intel CPUs. I agree the pricing on these things has gone a bit mental but I got one when they were a a fair bit cheaper.

Also, a 4790k isn't anywhere close to the end of its life unless you're one of those people who think that broadwell/skylake will suddenly render it obsolete, which they won't. That thing will probably chew through games for years to come.

To be fair, things have been a bit crazy this year with the exchange rates and everything else, so a bit of variance in prices isn't too weird.

There's also something else to consider: by going the AMD route you have to blow your dosh on a platform that, frankly, went a bit long it the tooth quite a while ago. I'd either wait till AMD comes up with a new architecture, which may take them a while jugding by the looks of things, or go the whole hog and buy an Intel CPU.

Thanks for the replies. Pretty much confirmed what I thought.

My current rig is:
Fx8350 @ 4.4ghz
8gb ram
2x4gb 770gtx's

In regards to upgrading I'm not sure. Due to it being planned for the latter part if this year I would say a budget of....£2000-£2500 initially for gfx/cpu/mobo and maybe psu(got 1000w atm but this depends on gfx) maybe more if I go sli again from the start but this also depends on what new cards come out, what new cpus etc.

I would like to go 4k next year but that would mean deciding if I want to upgrade all four of my 1080p monitors and replace all 4, or go down to 3( I am too used to multi monitor not to keep it) but they are not included in my budget initially.
And mainly it's based around gaming but I do a lot of work from home as well

We all pay the price sadly when there is currently no real competition.

You all pay the price - literally. If you voted with your wallets and didnt buy them intel would slash the fees overnight.

If you time it right though there are usually deals on most sites or bundles that can save you enough to make it less of a kick in the goolies.

Am sure the pound/dollor is a lot less then what it was 4 months ago, one reason why prices go up.
