Future proofing - PCIE5 or AM5 Socket?

Hi all,

I have a I7 3770k at the moment so you can see how long I keep a system and starting to be in position to be thinking of building a new PC, now the issue is that I was thinking AM5 socket motherboard but I'm on a budget so the MB's I would buy are all PCIE4 as the AMD boards are quite a lot of money but then I noticed that LGA1700 socket boards seems to be coming down in price and some have DDR5 and PCIE5 so now not sure what platform to go with.....A AM5 PCIE4 setup as the CPU support should last longer or a LGA1700 setup with PCIE5...which will last me longer?

Or should I just wait for AM5 PCIE5 MB's to come down....bare in mind I don't want to spend more the £170 on a MB and rest of parts will be on a budget....

Thanks for any advice....

If it comes down to a choice between a 3-5 year newer CPU (AM5 upgrade) or PCI-E 5.0, I'd take the CPU every time. The loss for a high-end card in an older gen board is usually only a few percent.

The only caveat would be if you were planning on running lower-end GPUs with limited PCI-E lanes (like the RX 6400/6500 XT equivalent), but I assume that won't be an issue.

Hmmm ok yeah I think GPU would mid range like a 6700 I reckon.... going with new CPU socket was my first thought but MB cost was higher for the pcie5.... thanks for your view.

Actually any ideas in when the new AM5 7** motherboards will come out, thinking I might just keep waiting?

Tbh, I wouldn't see a reason to expect they'll be any cheaper than the current 6-series :/

Does look like the cheapest B650E boards are in the region of £250 now, if you spot them on offer. It's still too damn much for a midrange board with no frills, but they do at least solve your problem and deliver AM5 socket longevity with a PCIE 5 slot. If you can wait a month or two in order to make the jump from 650 to 650E, that might be your best bet.

But as was said above; PCIE 5 vs 4 makes very, very little difference even with the fastest GPUs. Not really worth sweating over.

Hmmm yeah B650E does look like its coming down....I just did not know if new 7 series was close and that would give PCIE5 to more boards or push old boards down in price......anyway I guess I will just have to make a decision as I see offers come up. Thanks
