I am going to get to the point, i want a new rig for gaming, i was tempted to go for i7 but is it worth it at this point? Or is a tri 8800 rig the way to go whilst the i7 is still very new? I have a £1500, any feed back appreciated

Personally I would build i7 if I had the money at the moment, things are always going to go down in price though and new tech is always going to come.

In terms of GFX is concerned you could probably get more bang for buck with some GTX280s that triple 8800.

Ok, so you think i should hang on a little untill i7 comes down in price and is not as new? I thought a tri 8800 might of been a good little thing until then but you guys know a lot more than me :). Would it be dear to make a tri 8800 out of curiosity?

Tri-SLi is a bad idea unless you're drowning in money.

Very, very little gains (if any).

I could be horribly wrong though, does anyone have benchmarks on 280GTX Tri-SLi?

Hi R3dge, are you just after the base unit or will you be needing a monitor, operating system and peripherals as well?

If you do already have a monitor, what sort of size screen is it?

Regarding the graphics cards. It really is pointless going for the older Nvidia Geforce 8800 series since it is around 2 years old now. You would be far better of going with the newer cards released by Nvidia which are the Nvidia Geforce GTX 260 or the 280. :)

I have a 22" lcd :), OS and peripherals aren't a problem.

I had the tri 8800 because i know they together can still produce decent enough results and with them being a couple of years old be rather cheap, that's why i have that idea in my head. The advice you guys are giving is totally appreciated :).

unless you're desperate for the Crysis epeen, you can build a Core2Quad system and gtx 260/216 for a fraction the price. That'll run everything but Crysis on max on a 22" screen, and it'll do the same for any games out in the next 9 months from what i've seen of the release lists.

My advice - wait. Grab yourself a 4850 or the like to tide you over for another year, then go i7. Even a 4850 on an old Athlon X2 will eat up most anything at 22" res.

If you must have a new system and must spend all that money, i'd recommend you just build a C2Q system like i mentioned, and invest the rest of the cash in peripherals and a quality desk / chair if you don't already have them. A 24" screen and good keyboard/mouse/mousemat/headphones will do far more for your gaming enjoyment than a few extra fps.

Agree with zarf, I built my system coupla months ago and it was less than 1500 and for me its awesome :) Its upto you which gfx card route you go ATI/NVidia but a single gfx card is more than likely good enough, you can get a 280 or 4870 which will prob be better than 3x8800 anyway, and that'll dictate your MB, you're prob best getting one capable of SLI/X-fire in case you decide to add another card later. And unless you go bigger than 24" screen theres not much point spending too much on gfx cards anyway cos your resolution will be capped by your screen size anyway
