Future sockets

Are we likely going to see current coolers being able to support potential future sockets via new brackets or do you think we'll see a shift away to completely new tech ?

Asking as am I'm toying with the idea of going to an AIO as I know I'll be upgrading my 4770k in a couple of years but if that AIO would be incompatible then there's not much point and I may as well stay on air until I upgrade.

Yes I know none of us have a crystal ball, but it seems cooler tech which is 7+ years old (D14 etc) is still able to be used on current cpu's so it's more opinion on whether you think this trend will continue (great for consumers but not so much for the manufacturers if people can just keep reusing old tech)

Most of the bigger names provided upgrade mounting kits for their previous AIO when AM4 was launched, some were free others you had to pay a small fee.

Well, it really depends on what AMD's future AM4+ or AM5 socket will look like - this is due after year 2021.
The current AM4 socket will be supported till 2020, when according to the released schedules, the 4th genenration Ryzen processors will be unveiled.

For Intel's sockets, I do not know, but as far as history goes, the coolers get brackets for their new sockets.

Not only did Intel keep the same mountings over 4 sockets, but the previous several generations all used the same socket and spacing as each other - LGA775. And it's very easy to make a 775 cooler fit a 115x socket and vice versa, only the hole spacing is different. So assuming you'll buy desktop CPUs and not HEDT, my money is on Intel sticking with it for a bit.

How long can this last though ? Surely it's not a sustainable practice for the cooler manufacturers to just sell brackets and allow people to reuse old coolers ? I mean I'm not complaining I think it's brilliant for the consumer but from a business perspective it doesn't seem viable so something will surely have to change no ?

Why? Dualit toasters from 1970 still use replacement parts that fit current ones. People replace coolers. Anyway, sockets 1156, 1155, 1150, 1151 are identical so there were no new brackets needed.

Well think of it from a business angle, why would you sell a product that unless broken by the user one never needs buy ever again especially for a Heatsink where there's very little to actually break ? It just doesn't seem like an economically viable business practice

Yes but Intel and cooler manufacturers are not the same company, and entry of people buy new coolers with their new hardware. Is it that hard to comprehend that Intel design sockets without incurring unnecessary R&D costs?

This, I'm still using my old NZXT Kraken from the Intel system, i got an AM4 Bracket for it from OCUK, £3.99, does a superb job of keeping my Ryzen nice and cool

All the Intel 115x sockets use the same hole spacing, so a cooler you purchased as far back as Lynnfield should still be ok for Coffeelake. Whether this trend continues, who knows.

An aio isn't going to last as well as an air cooler anyway so no need to worry about future sockets op

(Being sarcastic of course, a decent aio should last passably well, tho of course not as well as air)
