I'm thinking of upgrading my spec in my signature to a Conroe! I'm planning on the following build:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
ASUS P5B Deluxe
Tuniq Tower 120 CPU Cooler
Antec 900 Case
But what I need is RAM and 2GB of it! After seeing the massive price cuts on RAM, I'm torn between the following sets:
  • OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK) - £103.39
  • Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz Dual Channel Kit (BL2KIT12864AA804) - £108.09
  • Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB) - £110.44
  • GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) - £117.49

They're all pretty similarly priced, but which one would give the best compatibility with the above specification, along with ideal overclockability?

Never really considered the Crucial range before, after the past forum threads regarding bad sticks on the Ballistix range but for the price - are they any good? Please advice on what to go for......!! :p

Get the Ballistix PC5300. They're the same chips as the 10th Anniversary sticks, and offer the same performance as the Ballistix PC6400. They're also incredibly cheap.

I wouldn't worry about reliability issues with older batches of Ballistix DDR, no one's had any problems with the DDR2 stuff, and Crucial have a great RMA service.

I mate

this setup:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
ASUS P5B Deluxe
Tuniq Tower 120 CPU Cooler
Antec 900 Case
Crucial Ballistix PC2 5300 / PC2 6400

is a perfect combination-great board,great cpu,great cooler,great case

my Ballistix PC 2 5300 does 500mhz ( DDR2 1000) easely with default voltage - 2.2V- at 15-5-5-5 or 12-4-4-4 at 400 mhz ( DDR2 800)

Ballistix PC 2 6400 is the same thing with diferente spd timmings
go for it :)

At that insane price - I might just go for it.

Question though - Are the ASUS Core2 boards pretty much compatible with any brand of RAM? I mean I "was" considering the Gigabyte DS3P or the DS4 but have heard that they do have brand preference on the type of RAM you use? A lot of people with Gigabyte just use the Geil series?
