Future Technology

Right, its about time that I upgraded again, at the moment I'm running my old AthlonXP 3200+ with a radeon 9800pro and its about time I upgraded, however is it worth it?

Is there any new technology that is on the horizon that is worth waiting for or shall I just go with a conroe system and a tasty 7900GT?

get a conroe, but get an ATI 1800 card for now, as Dx10 cards are coming out early next year... but deffo with getting a Conroe

I've just been looking on anandtech and those conroe benchmarks have really tempted me to get one now. But following in line with this thread, when are the DX10 cards coming out and what will they be bringing?

I would agree with conroe - but depending on which X1800 card you choose, you can get an X1900 for very little extra so check before you buy

Well since at the moment Conroe is being held back by the gfx cards it will hopefully help Conroe reach its full potential.... which should be fun, and they should be out early 1 quarter next year... I have heard that Nvidia will be bringing out there next gen gfx cards with a physics engine on it which will be fun

Very little extra? There's a £100 price difference between the Connect3D X1800XT and the X1900XT. Over 60% price difference and 10% difference in performance.

Well the 256mb x1800 is £160, and the 512mb version is £250, and the x1900xt 512mb is £260...

i guess he was comparing the 512mb versions.

And there is £10 difference between a couple of other X1800 and 1900's

( OCUK have one X1800 for £210 and a couple of X1900's for £220)

One main diff is the amount of memory onboard

There was a thread a few days ago that had benchmarks showing that 256mb and 512mb made no difference in performance at the same res

I thought that having 512 on board was better for higher res?

not according to tests, in furture i think it will- but its not needed atm (there was a test done between identically clocked 7800gtx , one with 256mb memory and a 512mb and they scored identical.
