I am wanting to look at possibly upgrading my GTX 690 which i had 2 years, to a single card with near equal performance so i can escape the issues we getting with micro stuttering and wondering if looking at the gtx 980 is possible upgrade or just see what additions come to this in the near future.

Am still using an overall old setup now which is a i7 920 water cooled oc to 3.6 from 2009 we 16gb of ram

Which is still going strong

You shouldn't really have any microstuttering with a 690

+1

I have used a pair of GTX 690s since they came out and never seen microstutter.

To answer the other question, a GTX 980 will give about the same performance as a 690 unless a game does not support SLI.

It won't be stuttering because of SLI. It's far more likely to be input lag which is being caused by texture streaming* when your card runs out of vram.

Texture streaming is Nvidia's bad idea of a joke. Basically when you run out of vram your cards use your paging file on the hard drive which causes all sorts of issues.

Apparently their latest cards can page directly from RAM, but sadly this is still far less than ideal because system ram is nowhere near as fast as GDDR5.

Nvidia have always been really mean with vram. It's their only way to make sure you'll keep coming back.

Yep NVIDIA seem to give almost a generation back worth of vram. Like the 6950 was 2GB so they then match that with Kepler. 3GB 7970? Ok let's slap that on a 780 Ti so it's got just enough bottleneck to need a Maxwell purchase.

IMO the 990 will probably come at the price of about 3 970s and not necessarily be worth it if the specs are basically GTX 980 x2.

If you're getting any stutter on a GTX690 you can cure it with Afterburner. If you increase the power limit you shouldn't get any stuttering at all unless you're running out of VRAM.

970 overclocked should be close in performance to a GTX690 though, with double the RAM. 970SLI would be an excellent upgrade.
