Hi. I'm planning a new build for my youngest kid. ( 10 year old ).. he only plays Minecraft and fortnite at the mo. His current pc is a hand-me-down. I5 / GTX 770. And it still holds its own on them games. He's saved up all his pocket money , bday / Xmas money and got about £1200 . If tried to talk him into an Xbox but he won't.

So question is will the next gen stuff in 2-3 years work on a b550 or x570 board. would it be worth spending now on a b550 and a 5600x. I don't mind spending £1500ish if it will last a while and be upgradable.
If not. I'll just go b450 / 3700x and save a few quid.. when GPUs are back in stock hopefully I'll grab a 3060ti to pair with it.

I know he doesn't need that kind of stuff for fortnite. But he's saved and if he's going for it I'd rather have it upgradable or not break the bank now and get a good 5 year or so out of it before having to start from scratch.

Also , Apart from GPU everything is in stock. Would you buy now and wait for a GPU or just wait it out and buy all at once. I'm not sure how much prices fluctuate.

Thanks.

Current Zen3 is the last architecture on AM4 and DDR4.
Zen4 will be DDR5 CPU on AM5.
Unless AMD makes variant of it with current DDR4 IO die.
(or there's some big problem with AM5/DDR5 and they have to back port it)

So unless you now get cheap Zen2 CPU only upgradability would be in core count.

Hi

THe 5600x is the better gaming cpu faster by 10 to 20% and slightly more dependrnt on game and resoloution compored to yhe 3700x. The extra 2 cores may be handy if he gets into streaming as well.

B450 lacks pcie4 which is not fully implemented at the moment but will probably be beneficial in the future.

B550 or x570 the latter offers more pcie4 lanes but for most a b550 will do,all boards will need bios update to take the 5600x so get one with bios flashback feature.

Wifi neefed ?

I would build now and iron out the system if any problems occur, reusing the 770.

List the parts youve chosen.

So just to make sure I understand. Whenever zen4 comes out. It won't be a straight swop into a either b550 or X570. Also the Ram will be different. So it'll be as good as needing a fresh build. So is it really worth spending extra on them boards a cpus while he's only playing fortnite ect. I might aswel save cash. Go B450 / 3700x and in a 4 / 5year ish when he's more into other games instead of upgrading his pc do a fresh build then. How would a B450 / 3700x / 3060ti with 3600mhz ram hold up for the next few year.

Your correct about zen 4.

You could get a 3700x with a b550 motherboard and have pcie4 support.

Whichever way yougo its going to last a good few years.

@EsaT 3700x or 5600x which one ?

I would go on the premise that Minecraft and Fortnite will soon be relegated for more advanced titles as he heads into his teenage years.

Very well at anything up to and inc. 1440p. I'd go cheap now if I were you, i'm on Ryzen 2600, B450 Pro Carbon and a 3060ti and i'm skipping everything until AM5.
