Does anyone ever wonder when the next major technological advancement for humanity will be and if they will still be alive to see it?

For example I wonder when regular space travel appears, cure for cancers, non-fuel running cars, nuclear fusion, etc will become reality.

Do people think that the next advances will be in their lifetimes and what may they be?

I think Carbon nano tubes are a huge leap forward, and can't wait to start getting products from them, from CPU's to capacitors instead of batteries to structural supports, I always love reading about future/newly discovered tech :D

Quantum computing is one in particular that holds lots of promise. Much more money will be ploughed into new forms of computation when the miniturisation of Silicon cannot continue, hopefully leading to an explosion in progress.

Nanotechnology and molecular engineering will both be a massive part of this century. In the near future, OLED and folding polymer screens will allow a more immersive on-the-move media and communications experience. Plus, I'm waiting for wallpaper that I can change the pattern of at the snap of my fingers. Imagine being able to display a lifesize Elisha Cuthbert on your bedroom wall, and at a whim change it to an image of the Bahamas or outer space. Sure, you could do this now with a bunch of huge posters, but it's not quite the same.

Nuclear fusion is obviously a massive one that I'm absolutely sure we'll crack towards the middle of the century. Fully operational commercial fusion powerplants by 2050, I reckon.

hasn't a commercial hybrid quantum processor been made in Canada or something last year?

needs liquid helium to cool it though?

As far as I was aware, the best we've done up to yet is construct a 'computer' that can calculate the factors of 15, using 7 quibits, but apparently this is not true quantum computing as no entanglement was used. It seems that in 2006, a 12-qubit quantum computer was made:

I'm not sure what you mean by 'hybrid' processor in this context.

I want to see a faster way of traveling from one place to another, I read in a paper about a plane they reckon would go to Oz in 4 hours, imagine a day trip to the USA would be awsome.

I'd love to see wireless technology progress further. Scientists have managed to transmit power over short distances, we're talking mm's. If we manage to crack the distance issue, and have the ability to transmit it many thousands of miles then we could in theory send solar panals into space facing our Sun, and have them as close as Mars, and transmit the power from there to the Earth. This would effectively resolve the energy issue today. Fusion power could be used in cars and other commercial transport and i'd like to see the poles of the Earth harnessed a lot more.

Cybernetic limbs which greatly outperform their flesh based equivalents; however these would have to be almost exactly the same in appearance to real human limbs for me to consider it :p

The technology of the future will be consciousness. And there's a huge shift in mass consciousness taking place right now which will peak on December 21 2012, the end of the mayan calendar so yes it will be in our lifetime.

Any stories on this mass shift so far???

Also the Mayan calender might end on that date, my Spiderman calender ends on the 31st December 2008. Doesn't mean the world will end.

The Mayan calendar does not end on that date.

One cycle of one of the Mayan calendars ends on that date (or thereabouts). The next cycle of it begins afterwards. The Mayans were big on cycles.

Yes but the mayans state that as our consciousness changes so does our perception of time and that we won't measure time the same way we have been post 2012.

Yes have a look at the world around you one day ;-)

If you want to know more about 2012 this talk is probably one of the best explorations of the subject on the web.

Secrets of the Mayan Calendar Part 1
Secrets of the Mayan Calendar Part 2
Secrets of the Mayan Calendar Part 3

It's 6 hours in total and although I highly recommend you watch all of it you might be able to get away with just watching the third part where he goes in depth about the years 2000-2012.
