Mate has offered me an fx-4 quad 4170.

I want to build a mini itx system. Is this CPU good?

What Mini itx mobo goes good with it?

Not for a mini-ITX system as there were no AM3+ mini-ITX motherboards and the FX4170 has a very high TDP.

One of the AMD FM2+ CPUs is a better fit for an AMD based mini-ITX system.

I am thinking of building a gaming rig. I would prefer itx but no board available for that CPU. Mate may have it going spare. My other alternative is to bite the bullet and go Skylake and use onboard GPU for now as i am not a massive gamer (Yet)

The gigabyte 78lmt usb3, It's an old chipset but a very capable board for overclocking the fx's.
Do not buy that garbage Asus matx board.

Have a search around places it generally retails around 35-40 quid, rev 5 or 6 are the better boards.
