FX-55, from 2.6 to 2.8 - what procedure?

Hi

Got a FX-55 (clawhammer) on socket 939, at stock it is (via cpu-Z):

Core speed:2613
Multiplier x13
HTT 201.0

Amongst other settings (voltage is 1.46XX)

My MOBO is a K8N Neo4

I read a review of overclocking the FX-55 - that it was possible to go to 2.8 - by just changing the multiplier

Quote from review """""We didn't use a 25x, but a 14x multiplier (original 13x). This setup let us reach 2.8GHz""""", .

in the cell menu, they changed it to 14x (i think) it is seen as 25x in the review)

I restarted my pc, and went into bios, and did the same, set the "Adjust cpu ratio" to "14x" - after save, exit, my pc started to boot up - but stopped - with a message: "detecting Array..." - it was locked up though, and had to restart. I was greeted with a blank screen straight away (blinking cursor top left screen). After a minute or so, I restarted again (4-5 times), and managed to get into bios (delete key), and set it back to "adjust CPU ratio" to "startup" (which mine was - not "25x").

Anyway, does anyone know why my pc acted this way, and why didn't it boot up? - I want 14x multiplier like Re: the review (which was a clawhammer same as mine). Was hoping I could get to 2.8 (FX-57 speeds) I'm on air though, no cooling or anything like that

TIA:(

what ram do you use?

i have a k8n neo4 and a amd 4400x2, this mobo really isnt verry good for overclocking but it does the job,

im guessing its your ram, allso what Wattage is your powersupply?

(EDIT: allso do you have the MSI liveupdate installed? you really need the latest bios to overclock with this mobo, i had the old ones and it just didnt happen)

My ram is Standard 3200 from overclockers,

600 watt PSU
All stock cooling

Just updating the bios now.

If I up the multiplier to 14x (it is 14 isn't it?) will I need to change anything else? (HT/Width/frequency/CPU voltage?

Some people (i've just read) use different settings like 220fsb and 3x "ht"? - or something like that)

Thanks :)

its a complicated thing when your new to it, erm.

hmmmmm, well your psu etc seems fine,

give it another try with the updated bios,

if it doesnt work then put the vcore up a bit, (Not a lot.)
my amd 4400x2 wouldnt clock at 1.35v and i took it to 1.4v and its fine,
so that might be another problem.

Also disable cool'n'quiet if its on :)

nope, you only need to lower the ht frequency and the ram's mhz if you overclock the fsb speed, when you higher the fsb, everything else gets higher aswell.

Allso, if u cant boot your pc up after u try changing your multiplyer again, and your system isnt working press the red button on your mobo bottom right of ** mobo to clear the cmos,

i just found out about that button other day, its a lot easyer than taking the bios battery out to refresh the bios lol

Ok ok ok woa woa hold on a min, erm.

dont just go and overclock with core centre, you will make it unstable and it will just go pop if your not carefull.

you really need these programs:

CPU-Z (tells you 100% esact readings of the speeds of everything in ya pc)
Orthos (a stability test, i ran it for 48 hours none stop 100%cpu load)

Optional:

Coretemp (gives esact reading of your core temp)

Do you have msn, ill give you some advice of how to do it, quicker than forum posting and waiting etc

Hi iceshock,

Well, I only just managed to boot up, it wouldn't get past the MSI mobo icon, and when it did, I was greeted by the "blink" on screen (top left). After many attempts to get booted up, I left it off for 10 minutes - and I finally got into bios. Could this be an indication that my CPU is very hot?

Anyways, going to leave it alone for a bit till I know what I'm doing :)

nope the voltage isnt low. mine can clock to 3.2ghz on 1.4v.

alltho the FX range of single core amd's there pretty high ghz as stock, there not built for a lot of overclocking.

not sure why its not working tho sorry mate

PS: best to use bios to overclock, software just sucks :)

the fx series are those ones meant to be overclocked (well in theory anyway) hence the fact that they have an unlocked muti, anyways have you tried the lastest bios of your motherboard?

Yes, latest Bios.

I didn't use the software to overclock , but posted the core centre software so you could see my other settings etc.

I just think, myself, that it's too hot to overclock, as it uses the stock cooler. If i did go for a 939 upgrade, what would be the best/fastest CPU? - FX60/4800+? if these are available that is! - and would it be a simple in with the old out with the new? - or would there be some more bios settings required? (stepping and the sorts).

Heard these FX-60's aren't cheap though
Also hearing (rumour) no more room for 939 from AMD headquarters :(
