I've just installed the above and have it under a freezer pro rev 2, I'm hitting 54c in prime so looking for a better cooler, any suggestions?

SJ.

54C in prime is not that high for this processor. I used to use a Phanteks cooler on my 8350 which was good for 4.7GHz and a bit more on prime.

Yes, but if it is only getting to 54C that is fine, unless it it is still rising. 62C is safe and it will go a bit more without throttling. I think that 54C at stock using prime is not unreasonable. A better cooler will drop that down to mid forties and allow a better clock.

TBH the max temp for me is the one when my PC hard locks lmao.

I wouldn't worry about damaging it, Windows will crap out long before you do :)

Yeah andy is right about windows giving up before you can do damage on any reasonable voltage. Still, almost anything is better than stock cooler and will help you get much better clocks.

Budget for the cooler?
What case?

If the spec of 159.5mm cpu clearance is correct there are a few possibilities. Your SMX3 is only 32mm clears cooler but a 140mm front cooler fan will not fit.

Cooler size comparison (Width x Depth x Height looking from front of case with motherboard laying flat)
K2 / Assassin . = . 8x 6mm pipes 140x128x158mm 146x154x160mm w/ 120mm & 140mm PWM fans43.2mm*
NH-D14 . . . . = . . 6x 6mm pipes 140x130x160mm 140x158x160mm w/ 120mm & 140mm fans44mm*
Megahalem. . = . . 6x 6mm pipes 130x74x158.7mm plus fans 40mm*
HE01 . . . . .= . . . 6x 6mm pipes 140x119x160mm w/ 140x38mm PWM fan 42mm*

I know some are 160mm.. I think you can squeeze the extra 0.5mm in. ;)

In your price range my choice would be
Alpenfohn K2 £49.99
Cooler is 158mm and center fan can easily be lowered a little.

Please define "it"... what is 164mm high?

AFAIK the Dragon Slayer only has 159.5mm of CPU clearance (133-134mm w/ side fan)

Alpenfohn website says K2 is 160mm tall. 3D drawing on website says 129d x 140w x 158.5mm high.

Sorry, the spec of the K2 on the oc page says it's 164mm high.

Glad to be able to help. Others have helped me so it's nice "play it forward".

Please let us know how it all works out.

Just posting back to let you know I tried the one you suggested but it wouldn't fit in my case, so in the end I went for a water-cooling kit for £5 extra, so far my core temps have not been above 39c under stress testing :)
