Hi 8pack,
I'm after a little advice on overclocking my system.
I currently have an AMD FX4100 on an ASUS M5A99X motherboard ( i know the cpu it's far from the best) but it was cheap and does the job just about until i Haswell arrives and i swap over.
I'm not very clued up on overclocking, i understand the basics behind it all but that's about it, plus, my motherboard has so many options when it comes to overclocking i feel a little overwhelmed tbh.
So far I've managed 4.6 @1.4volts with temps around 60c.
The only problem is that it's not 100% stable and i get crashes in bf3,
i don't really run benchmarking/stability tests like prime etc, i prefer to just trying playing games, bf3 mostly as i get 100% usage most of the time on both the cpu and my gpus. maybe this is where i'm going wrong by not using prime etc?
I'd really like to get it stable at 4.6 so any info/help at all would be really appreciated.
Incase it helps, here's my full specs
ASUS M5a99x Evo 990x motherboard
AMD FX4100 (Arctic freezer 13 cooler)
ATi 6870s in crossfire
12gb Corsair vengenace LP (DRR3 1600mhz)
Many thanks
Davy

Thanks for taking the time to answer me 8pack as i understand your busy :)
Glad to know i'm not going too far wrong with it.
I've added a little volts like you said, i've also put LLC for both the CPU and NB on extreme.
Still getting crashes on bf3 but they seem less frequent now so i'm heading in the right direction i guess.
When the game crashes it just pops up saying APP CRASH> Bf3.exe
I'll try and get a bit more info for you when it happens again.
In regards to the BSOD, it's product 256_1, which is memory related isn't it?
Again thanks for taking the time to help me out 8pack

Davy

Right managed to download latest memtest ran it, found no errors at all.
Had a quick go on Bf3, all my temps where fine, cpu was 58c and both cards below 65c.
System crashed about 8 minutes in.

Hiya 8pack, tried looking for vtt settings but seems my motherboard doesn't have them, at least not what i could see :( but........
After doing a little testing i decided to try and remove 2 stick of ram, i remember reading somewhere that having full dimm slots can cause oc/instability issues.
Currently have 12gb (2x 2gb & 2x 4gb), so i removed the 2gb sticks after having 30mins on bf3 didn't suffer any crashes thus far :)
Does this all sound right to you?
is there much difference between 8gb and 12gb for gaming, performance etc?
It's it just a case of instability causes by having all the dimms full, i think i'll just pick up a 16gb kit on payday.
