Hi Guys

a friend of mine is wanting to put some small time upgrades on his pc,

he currently runs
AMD FX 4100
8GB 1600 MHz RAM
radeon 7770
7200rpm hdd
asus motherboard , cant remember the model but its half decent from what I was looking at last night

he keeps getting fps drops in games like LOL , and whats to upgrade some of his kit, he has cleaned the entire pc out and formatted his pc but the drops are still present.

Would you all agree best way to start would be to upgrade processor to the FX 6300? He's also looking to change his case and buy some cooling fans as heat has always been a slight problem for him in his current setup.

Any suggestions appreciated, rig itself is 2-3 years old apparently.

I mention the 6300 as hes looking to spend around 80-90 quid on a new processor, or I could convince him to just get a new case, and buy more fans later then put money he was going to spend on fans into the fx 8320?

thanks

A 6300 would definitely improve gaming performance, the 4100 isn't very good, used to have one myself. As for the fans I'd suggest some Corsair AF fans, they're a little expensive but they're pretty good. If he was willing to spend more he could get some Noctua fans; they're pretty expensive and pretty ugly but cooling doesn't get any better (except for watercooling)

A 8320 would be better for little more though, save and get that

Yeah, the problem he's having is CPU.

LoL and games like that (WoW and other MMO's) are heavily CPU bound.

Unfortunately they (those games) don't properly support AMD's core layout, 2 'cores' per 'module core'. So intel is a much better choice.

But considering there is a very small budget to play with the best option is to get a 8320.

Please remove the competitor mention mx0range and read the FAQ regards these and Jak3 Mac please delete the quote.

Unless something has significantly changed with the lol engine in the past year, it only uses 2 CPU cores, so the 8320 recommendations are a bit out.

If he has an el cheapo motherboard, overclocking would be very limited, so his best bet would be the fx 4350; it's clocked higher than the 6300 an 8320, so will outperform it in lol, despite it's 4 cores vs the 6 an 8 of the 6300 and 8320 respectively

Lol CPU benchmarks;

Are you sure it's the CPU?
