Hello people

I was going to get the FX60 today but i change my mind , so i am going to keep my FX57 , i am not a computer wizard like most people on this forum .

So my question is

Is it worth overclocking my FX57 and have i done the right thing not to get a FX60 ?

How would you clock a FX57 and is it safe and how do this ?

Firstly, i think you propbably have made the right decision to keep the FX57 as it's still the best performing AMD single core CPU at the moment. Socket M2 (the new AMD socket) will be out way before your FX57 will need to be upgraded. Keep it for the moment and upgrade later as in only a few months, there will be a whole load of new technology out which will be worth getting over the FX60. Also, the FX60 runs at a lower clock speed to the FX57 (2.6GHz as a pose to 2.8GHz) and will only really have an improvement in speed if you multi-task a lot and when games start to take advantage of dual core processors. Until this happens, the FX57 should be faster.

Secondly, yes it is worth overclocking your CPU, especially as it's and FX57 as they are well known for getting very high overclocks because they have unlocked multipliers. You should easily be able to get more than 3GHz on stock/air cooling and even more if you go for water cooling or phase change.

Thirdly, have a read of the Overclocking guide for newbies thread which should help you to understand about how to work out the speeds/settings etc. However, that guide is for older CPU's and there are some differences with the new ones.

Hope that helps ;)

I think you have done the right thing not getting the FX 60.

What you could do if you were wanting to overclock is get an opteron 170 instead for 300 quid and overclock it to FX 60 speeds.

That way you get dual core and the same performance for £500 less :)

They clock to 2.6-2.8 ghz on air effectively 2x FX 57's in your pc :) ;)

i would save my money, keep the fx 57 which will easily last to the end of the year as a high performer, and then decide on an upgrade.

I have FX57 i would keep it and watch where the hardware development goes my cpu linked with 7800 gtx and 2 gig of ram is very nippy :) would you really see a speed increase that is visible to the human eye you may see a bigger benchmarkscore but in the real world that means zip :D

If it was me id look to selling it while the moneys still good on it.Big waynes got the right idea.Think about it.

you were going to buy a faster one anyway.

Its a toy.

As people are pointing out theres not much difference in chips for games as its mostly to do with graphics cards.Unless your a celeron kinda guy.

New technology will come out and if you still follow the forums you can watch the value of your chip plummet and write posts about it.Performance will stay practically the same for you.If you sell it now you could probably get the same/similar money for it and buy something else, for experiance sake.
Youll be having some fun with your purchase then as no one can take away the experiance of someone who owned an fxf7. But if you miss the crest of the wave so to speak, youll still want a new processor or graphics card, when youre bored of the performance. But your "chip-money" will have devalued.A bit like stocks and shares really, when youre on high end expensive stuff.
