I have a FX6300 in a GA-970A-DS3 board (rev 1 latest bios) I can only clock it to 4.1ghz, 4.2 and it crashes. Is there something Im not doing correctly, Im only changing the multiplyer after disabling the boost. Is it just cause its a rubbish motherboard? Or could it be some setting I need to change?
 
You need to increase the CPU voltage a notch.

You also need to stress test for each increase. Run a test using OCCT for about 10 minutes as a quick stability test, it gets hotter than prime 95 and has handy graphs built in. As a rule of thumb 10 minutes of OCCT = at least 2 hours of Battlefield 3 gaming. Make sure to check the graphs for thermal throttling, it will register as a decrease in core frequency.

Do you know the highest I can go voltage wise and also the highest temp?
 
Maximum per core temperature is 62C, maximum safe voltage is 1.55V but I wouldn't exceed 1.5V with an air cooler.

People say the temperature readings are inaccurate on these CPUs so some take the maximum to be "as high as I can go without throttling".
 
I'm overclocking a FX6350. I'm at 5.224GHz. :). I have a big watercooling rad, 480mm, and D5 Laing pump. All XSPC. All the fans are set to low and the pump is too. Silence is golden! Currently been running an AIDA stress test for 6:34 and temps are reading 52 degrees.

My settings are multiplier of 22. FSB of 235, voltage is 1.5625v I think. Need to check. It's reading 1.56v in CPU-Z at the moment and that's what's important. Now at 8:30 in the test and temps are at 53 degrees.

I read core temps are safe to 70c but it may be information I was reading.

There's no way that board will take it to 5GHz - but if the voltage hasn't been increased, 4.1-4.2GHz is usually the max you'll get.
 
The board has solid VRMs but as it's 4 phase, non-heatsinked then making sure they are kept cool is paramount, either with a side mounted fan blowing onto the mainboard or a rear mounted fan drawing air across, unless he has a top mounted as opposed to a side mounted cooler.
 
Even with active cooling it'd be difficult to take a 6300 much above 4.2GHz with only 4+1 phase. Some Gigabyte boards without VRM heatsinks have mounting holes for one, and Gigabyte will send one for free if you sent an SAE -- I don't think this board does though.
 
I have an Arctic cooler13. Sounds like my overclock is about right for my mother board then. Thanks for all the advice :)
 
By all means try pushing it a little higher. It's not the CPU cooling that's the issue, it's the VRM cooling. You stand a good chance of at least 4.2GHz if you raise the voltage slightly. From what I gather 4.2-4.3GHz is about the maximum on cheaper boards.
 
If that's the case I think I will just stick with 4.1 and not over do it . Dont think id notice any difference even at 4.3
