hi guys im a bit confused with my rig. ive finally moved it into my airconditioned room which sits at 16 deg c constantly.

before i got a max oc of 4.8ghz with about 5deg c thermal margin and it needed a 120mm fan directed at the vrm heatsink.

now ive managed 4.8ghz after tweaking needing less vcore (1.500v) with a 24 deg c thermal margin no throttling. im using a 92mm fan sat 10mm above the vrm heatsink and a 120mm fan blowing air towards that area as well.

i then got 4.9ghz stable at 1.562v with a 21 deg c thermal margin again no throttling.

so my question is basically with having a 21 deg c thermal margin can i keep bumping up the voltage towards 1.6v or will it kill it regardless of temps? i know 1.55v is max recommended.

i have llc set to ultra high in the bios too so pretty much what i set it to it stays at during stress testing.

many thanks, damien.

ive tried several methods. i reduced the multi to 10 and the highest fsb it would boot with was 260. so i tried 260 x 18.5 for 4.810ghz with 1.500v and its stable in amd overdrive after 30m with a thermal margin of around 24 deg c.

next i tried 252 x 19.5 for 4.914ghz @1.55v and it failed the amd overdrive stability test after 7m. i bumped it up to 1.562v and it ran for over 30m no problems. still well within thermal margins. (around 20 deg c mark).

i did try 257 x 19.5 for 5.011ghz @ 1.575v but it failed after about 5m still with a 18 deg c thermal margin. i stopped there to ask for advice first before going any higher.

im upgrading to a 4790k and z97 s-oc force next month anyway im just trying to get the best i can out of it for flight simulator x as it needs as much cpu power that you can throw at it.

would you suggest sticking with the 4.8ghz oc as thats what im running now. i can run all the fans on low speed with it too but not that makes a difference when my aircon unit and dialysis machine are on haha.

If your room is AC then at least you have some control on the temperatures. I would probably be content with using 1.5v and tweaking to see what MHz you can end up without having to go higher.

A tad over 4.8 isn't bad going, unless you are benching that clock speed is ample for the games/encoding. You wont get much value trying to hit 5GHz.

It's amazing how much heat they give off. I've got a digital aquarium thermometer with the probe in front of the intake grille and when I turn the ac off it goes up by 4 or 5 deg c. I'm happy at the 4.8ghz I've got as it's now running less vcore than it was. I rendered a 2.3gb/25m long 1080p video earlier and it took 1h 10m. Is that any good?

ok guys a bit of an update. i originally had my rad in the roof running the fans in pull in between it and the case. this evening ive swapped them round so the fans are now running in push. ive took a screenshot with it at full load during amd overdrive stability test. this was after about 5m:

when professional overclockers use ln2 with these chips they run a silly voltage through them does it always ruin the chip? as you can see from the pic its now running about 4 or 5deg c cooler just switching the fans and cleaning them. they were pretty clean anyway. do you reckon i can go up to 1.6v or beyond with this cooling arrangement? im planning on buying z97 equipment next month anyway so if it blows up it blows up.

Someone on the 83xx thread emailed AMD about what their recommendations are, I think they said that 1.6v is the absolute max, though they don't recommend going above 1.5v.

ok awesome thanks. ive always worked to 1.55v max but ill be buying my upgrades in about 2 weeks so ill see what i can get out of the old girl about that time. :)

i just played f1 2014 for 2 1/2 hours max settings in 1080p and max package temp was 38 deg c and gpu also 38 deg c. that was cpu @4.8ghz and gpu @1384mhz.

When testing for max base clock, did you set the ram at it's lowest divider? and keep the NB and HT around stock?

I have the Sabretooth R1, which allows me 333 bclk. Which allows 5ghz @ 1.55 ish for me, the ram to run at 2200 and the HT and NB at about 2500.

The settings and bios screens are buried in some of my old posts.

Thats a good point, need to make sure to set ram to correct speed! Easy to forget

Aha I didn't do that no I kept the ram about 1600mhz (rated 1866mhz) and nb and ht around stock. I'll try knocking the ram right down later and see what fsb I can get. It doesn't seem to get as hot using the fsb method.

The fsb changes the ram speed to, so if it was set at 1600 and you increased fsb by 50%, you also increase the ram speed massively too so that may well have been your problem.

before i was keeping the ram at around 1600mhz adjusting it as i pumped the bus up. i tried turning the ram multi right down and cpu multi to 4. went from a max 260 fsb to 310 fsb. was 4.8ghz @1.512v in bios very high llc. its now 4.96ghz @1.53v in bios very high llc. thats 310 x 16. i tried 310 x 16.5 5115mhz which im guessing is your settings cwgk91? @1.582v it failed amd overdrive stability test after 2m so i decided to go for broke and whacked it up to 1.6v just to see if it would do a cinebench r15 run and it did it and scored 795 which is my highest to date. i then set it back to 4.96ghz which did a 779 cinebench r15 run. many thanks for the ram tip its made a huge difference. :D now to smash that score in about 2 weeks time with a 4790k haha.

Mine is at 280 fsb I think, cant tell you atm as that pc is out of action as I just sold the ram to someone :D Will get it back up and running soon! Youre giving me the AMD overclocking bug again grr

not sure you mean low as in the lowest for a given clock before its unstable or literally low. ive got 4.96ghz @1.53v stable. i ran amd overdrive for an hour and there was no throttling, i think mainly because ive now got a 92mm fan 10mm above the heatsink, a 120mm fan ghetto wedged in between the ram and cpu block blowing air accross the cpu socket towards the vrm heatsink and a 140mm ghetto cable tied to the window side of the case blowing air towards the 92mm fan. i havnt completly removed the side panel its leant up against the case so it can draw fresh air but hopefully limit dust particles in the air.

ive ordered a few upgrade parts already. i had the xspc raystorm intel cpu block from when it was on offer during the amd shop event. ive recently bought another xspc razor gpu block and backplate and one of those fancy evga sli bridges that light up haha. well chuffed ocuk have got some more evga gtx770 sc acx (2774kr) in hopefully theres one left on 20th of november when i can order the rest of my shopping list. :D will be £850 well spent i reckon. will be getting a 4790k, gigabyte s-oc force, xspc sli block, a 2nd gtx770 and some orange spray paint for the sp120 fan rings. i think blue/orange with gold fittings will look pretty snazzy when its done.
