fx8350 OC and cooling

hi guys, I am quite new to the whole Overclocking thing but i'd like to give it a go. however, I don't think that my current cpu cooler will be enough to achieve anything significant safely.
could you guys have a look at my system and let me know if anything would need changing? (also if you had any advice a first overclock that would be great).
here is my current setup:
NZXT Phantom Enthusiast - White & Red
XIGMATEK LOKI Heatsink & Fan - Low Noise
ZOTAC GTX 780 AMP! edition
AMD FX 8350
Corsair CS650M
1 TB Seagate (1000 GB) SATA-III HDD 7200 RPM 64MB
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64 BIT

I know i had my 6350 @ 4.5 on 1.46v i think. Stayed fairly cool on my prolimatech Armageddon. If you want a air cooler then the HE01 is the master or get at least a h80i in push/pull config.
 
I was wondering if this is normal:
I've downloaded prime 95, cpuz and fanspeed and I noticed that my cpu voltage fluctuates a lot. Under prime 95, it drops to 1.2 and fluctuates between 1 and 1.2. The multiplier also goes from 16 to 20.
idle, the voltage fluctuates between 1.35 and 0.8 and multiplier drops to 7.

I tried a very light OC (4.1) just to see how things worked and the system froze after 2 min in prime 95.

could you guys let me know if this is normal?
 
Your idle voltage and multiplier changes are because you have Cool n Quiet enabled in bios.

What is your motherboard?

If your VRMs overheat you can get throttling or unstable power delivery to the CPU under load.

Also if you are moving to a custom loop sooner or later, might as well pay an extra few quid and do it right off the bat, as that fathoms shouldn't really be expanded due to the weak pump. Its cost isn't far off a good entry level loop and the custom loop would perform a fair bit better.

my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5. i'll make sure i've disabled cool m quiet (i thought i did but i must have done it wrong).
would there be a way of finding out if it's my VRMs overheating?

also since this happened, i've change all the setting back to default and my computer froze again (the only things running were cpuz and fanspeed).

Hmmm

A ud5's VRMs shouldn't overheat at all even with no active cooling near it. Touch the VRM heatsink after a few stress tests. It will heat to its top temp in only a few mins, so no need to run prime of an hour. Be careful though, might be quite hot!

Some boards have temp sensors for the VRMs and programs like HW monitor will show you the temps (wont be listed as VRM temp but one of the non cpu temps).

Crashing is either due to CPU stability or memory. Upping the voltage on the CPU will help if it is at fault. Run memtest to see if it is the memory, long and tedious but it will rule out the most likely cause.

ok thank you I'll run mem test and see because I'm supposed to have 16gb at 1600Mhz and when I check it only says that it's running at 1300 or so.

I've just done some really oc without touching the voltage and it seems stable now. I had to deactivate all C states.

I was also wondering, once I've found a stable OC, can I turn cool n quiet back on?
 
I have a new problem, I can't get anything stable past 4.15 Ghz even by upping the voltage because I keep on getting vdroop. i can't have prime95 running for more than a minute. temperatures are fine. i've disabled all the C states and cool n quiet. should i change the LLC? i've got it set on auto at the minute.

Yes, I have a crosshair and I run ultra high LLC for the CPU and high for the CPU/NB. Check what voltages higher LLC gives you though as some bioses can overvolt on high LLC.

I've got it on high at the minute and I've got 1.3v more or less stable. managed 4.2ghz stable so far (I know it's not much but I'm still learning).
I don't know if I dare set it to very high just yet. I'm going to see how far I can go without having to touch the voltages until I get proper cooling (I've only got the stock case fans and a xigmatek heatsink)

managed to sort the vdroop issue and everything runs fine but I've still got about 1.3 vcore.

I've got another issue now. ive got 16gb of 1600mhz ram but I found out that it's only running at 1300 ish. if I set it manually to 1600mhz (or enable xmp profile) with stock cpu clocks, it works fine but if I do the sane thing once the cpu is overclocked, I get a failure to boot. and now I've also got a weird on/off/on cycle every time I turn my pc on.
could you guys let me know what I should do?
 
Select 1600 manually. Also, very high LLC is as far as i go when i had my sabertooth. Turn off Vdroop, it will conflict with LLC.

Someone tell me if i'm wrong. You should do 4.5Ghz, 1.35 and upwards is a good place to start. However, perhaps a new cooler first before that.

thanks for the reply. I was thinking of watercooling my whole rig but at the minute I can't afford it (car crash) so i'm going to go for a better aircooler first and sell it (if somewhere to do so) when I switch to watercooling.
