is there any where that gives a direct comparison between ATI and Nvidia cards

Eg. An Nvidia 6800 is equiv level to a Radeon 9800 etc

no because they are all different but u cant do it your self, but they still would be different in performance

toms USED to be great, you could select any 2 (or 3) cards from drop downs and then get a comparrison score.

but after numerous serches on there I can find the function anymore.

of course all cards are a little different, but you 2 cards are still comparable, particuarly when they are different makes of card at the same time (eg anm nvidia card XXX V an ATI card XXX of the same era)

I'm sure the NV 6800 was much better than that, i.e. equivalent to ATI's X800 series.

I honestly don't know, I never did figure out which ATI was the equiv, my own fault, been with nvidia since my first geforce 2

just trying to find a card to go into a media centre, that is equiv of a 6600 ish, but the ati question has always been on my mind

Of what's currently out? Think the ATI 4670 would beat those. But if not gaming, maybe the 4650 or 4550 or even NV's 9500GT.

I know that a ATI 1600XT is about the same as a 6800GT performance wise as i have had both. A 4670 would beat them significantly and would be a great low power choice.

Generally, a good comparrison over the whole board is great, although for this particular build its only AGP

Think my problem, probabaly is, that there are so many variables these days, as with most things PC, g.cards have become overly complicated
