hi all, ( beeen reading here for a while but new member)

i have just taken my first leap and built my own pc built with as follows:

Gigabyte GPA890 UD390H
AMD Phenom II 1090t BE
8GB G skill 1600mhz (7-8-7-24)
ATI HD6870
1TB HD + 1.5TB HD
2x DVD RW
Coolermaster scout case

everything has been running with no hiccups for over a week now ;) so over the moon, i have no intension of OC the mem or CPU but took a quick look in the MB intelligen tweaker (to swich on the AMD turbocore which works fine), and it was saying my memory is running at 1333mhz, so i went down to the settings and changed the setting to 8x which came out at 1600mhz (yippee) but then i noticed the timings in my bios are set at 9-9-9-24 should i change them manually to the listed 7-8-7-24 specs and voltage is on 1.5v, should i leave this alone or is this common for MB's to have silly setting for higher spec memory!

thanks for any help much appreciated ;)

ok i changed the settings in bios and have had no problems yet, setting the timings to manufacturers statings of 7-8-7-24 and upped voltage to 1.590 and overdrive is now reading target 800mhz and actual 803.mhz, does this sound where it should be, i know it may sound pickey but if i buy 1600 mem i want it at 1600 not 1333 lol, just being a bios noob just wanted to make sure this is ok

thanks

also ive just noticed my mem use on idle is now 18% whereas before i changed it was 22% does this make sense?

if it seems to be working well at 7-8-7-24, 1600MHz, 1.5v, then leave it at that.
If you want confirmation, get memtest86+ and burn it to a BOOTABLE CD. Run for several hours (I used to just leave mine going while I slept/ did other stuff). If it passes that then theres nothing a x86 environment can do that will crash it (unfortunately to my knowledge there is still no way to test memory natively at x64, apart from thrashing it in a 64 bit program/game)

edit: download the prebuilt ISO and burn to a CD-R

thanks just make sure i aint doing nothing wrong lol

just ran mem test all fine, with settings 1600mhz 7-8-7-24 on 1.5v

yipee!!
