Memory choices here and I wanted your opinions.

gonna be running the Asus Rampage III Extreme and an i7 930 Processor.. don't want to do 4.0 Ghz.. prolly 3.2 or somewhere in the mid 3's ghz.

I really like the trident because it's much more cheaper from G.Skill but requires a lot of tweaking, the stock timings are 9-9-9-24 @ 2000mhz and people can get them down to 6-7-6-18 1600mhz (which is what I really want to do) I'm worried about realiability, failure, and if it's gonna run at the timings I want.

Then the question is, should I pony up the money for the Dominator sets and get what I would expect for the money?

Dominator GT's

2000mhz 8-8-8-24
1600mhz 7-7-7-20

or Mushkins 2000mhz set?

8-7-8-24

what do you guys think?

The Dominators use the Elpida Hyper J1108BASE-MNH-E chips, which are the best chips available. Kingston uses it in their Hyper-X series, and G.Skill uses it in their Perfect Storm series. However Corsair is the only manufacture that has fixed the low yield problems. Thus I wouldn't buy any MNH-E Hyper kits other than the Dom GTs.

Should you buy them? No. They make absolutely ZERO difference, as mentioned before the i7 is actually made for 1066MHz/1333MHz chips anyway, so it makes no sense to splash out on super expensive kits like the GTs.

The G.Skill Tridents are your best bet, I too am going to be buying a kit very soon. I'm not sure which chips the Mushkins use but the Tridents use Elpida J1108BBSE-DJ-F chips which are almost as good as the Hypers.

The one thing I would point out however, I would opt to run the kit at 2GHz @ C9 rather than 1.6GHz @ C6 - tests have shown that with the i7, higher clock rate always wins over lower latencies.

It'd be a crime to get a Rampage III Extreme with premium RAM and not overclock higher! :p

In any case, reaching those high RAM speeds will require you to use higher BCLK:Mem ratio which aren't always stable. To run a lower ratio and still achieve 2000MHz on the RAM, you'll want to overclock further.

I have the Tridents running 7-7-7-20 at 1600 on my Asus P6TD Deluxe and my i7 920 at 4gig, runs cool and not had an issue( not tried 6-7-6-18 yet, may try it tomorrow and see how i get on)), excellent performance. Have tried to reach 2000 on the memory at 4gig but the mobo flakes out, can hit it at stock levels with just a small tweak of the volts. so if you are only overclocking to about 3.2 - 3.6 you should ba able to hit 2000 no problem, even with higher latency 2000 mem will outperform lower latency with slower speed. The G-Skills in my experience are way better, my first purchase was 2nd hand from ebay and one of the stick was faulty, RMA'ed and within 2weeks I had 3 new sticks delivered and they have been running no issue ever since, paid £120 on ebay so bit of a bargain, support and RMA with G-Skill is very very good indeed.:D

Have you asked yourself what difference you are truly going to experience with these timing differences?
Especially after OCing what real world differences will there be?

Regarding your choice to purchase premium components but not use them to their full ability, let's all buy Ferrari's and reverse around Silverstone shall we?
