Bit of advice needed really...Have been with Tmobile for years now and happy to stay with them. I am due an upgrade in the next two weeks and i really want to get a phone that suits my needs!

Currently i have the samsung soul which has been great but i need more from a phone now. I use the internet through my phone everyday and send a lot of txts. I am torn between the G1 and the Blackberry Bold.....

Just need some advice one which is good as i have heard the G1 has bad battery life!

Thanks;)

I have a BB Curve (8890?) which is similar to the bold and I'd say it's the best phone I've ever had. It's very easy for using the internet on and from what I understand the Bold is meant to use a similar interface. Battery life is top notch and it's very useful being able to get emails on the move.

Saying all that, I know nothing about the G1.

Heres my honest opinion and ill apologise if it comes across as fanboi-ish:p. Ive had my BB Bold since last Dec and ill be honest no other device has and can come close to what it does..effective communication via email etc. I absolutely love the device and having owned Winmo and Symbian devices...the BB imho blows them all away.
Its pretty well built, but is a biggish device ie wide but its got some serious power...its got to the point that i no longer need to be sitting in front of my laptop or work pc to fire off an email...the keyboard on it is an absolute joy to use and makes life so much easier when emailing and texting.

Internet browsing isnt too bad really, theres no flash support sadly but skyfire the browser is currently in testing so should be available soon. Battery life is pretty good altho the more you use the device the more it drains but i get through a good days work before it gives up on me...ive always got it on charge when im at home and it uses a mini usb cable so you can charge from a laptop or pc.

What i would suggest you do is to pop into a tmobile store and ask if they have any demo units...if not they usually have a dummy unit which looks and weighs the same. You could if you wanted to pop into a Vodafone shop as they usually have demo units on display in most stores. Failing that just order one...you have 7 days in which to change your mind if you dont like it...probably the best way to see if you like it. You will have to pay an extra £10 on top for the Blackberry internet service and web n walk...without those the Bold doesnt really shine imho.

If you want to do some serious research on it then click the link underneath my sig;)...thats the place to be for everything Blackberry including the Bold...in fact they have forums set out for each of the BB devices.

I'll say this though, with the Bold you will be very happy...id be suprised if you werent..they do the 8900 curve which lacks 3G but is smaller in the hand...its a very nice device...i had one from tmobile as thats who im with...sent it back as couldnt live without 3G...in fact end of april was my upgrade so i got another Bold from tmobile...this one is network branded whereas my original Bold isnt...sim free. Ive just unlocked the one i got from tmobile and have put it up for sale to see if i get any interest in it....if not ill be running it as a backup device.

Now getting onto the G1...if you really want an Android phone then i suggest you go to Vodafone and get the HTC Magic...i picked one up last week and i have to say its thoroughly impressed me..its much nicer and better looking than that fugly G1...that phone looks like a toy:p. But im having immense fun with the Magic...i got it on a £35 per month tariff with 600 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited internet....mind you im using it as a media device..downloaded a fair few apps and games on it.

So there you go mate...seriously id do some research on a BB before getting one...if you still want one then go for it but you may find it isnt quite the device for you especially if your not into emailing and staying in touch whilst on the move...thats why i suggest heading over to www.crackberry.com and read about the phones and peoples general opinions on it..most of them are Canadian/American but im on there most of the times. Take some of the stuff there with a pinch of salt as some people just like ot moan for the sake of it.

Good luck with your decision though.

G1's battery life is fine with the new 1.5 software so it's not really a problem. The android OS is really easy to use and has great potential and web browsing on the g1 is a dream. The bold is a great phone as well but if you don't make use of the Blackberry plan then i'd say for web browsing the g1 edges it. Also the G1 is great for text messaging with multiple convenient input methods.

Both great phones but only difference I know of is the crap battery life on the G1, if thats sorted then just go into the shop and have a play with them both and see what you prefer!

Hey thankd for the replies...really helps. I definately think i will venture into the store and have a play around and get some advice. Cheers guys

What Spawn said. I wouldn't consider the BB 8900 as it's not 3G.

The Bold achieved a holy grail thing for me which was reliable Slingplayer over 3G with a useable battery life. Something none of my windows phones could do.

I've got the Bold and I love it! Only naff thing for me is the battery, it seems to drain quite quickly..

Depends on perspective I suppose. The battery always please me but my last two phones were HTC Kaiser and Diamond which were much worse.

im looking into getting a BB curve or bold in the next few weeks when my contract runs out, i think i would prefer the slightly larger bold due to the 3g but i cant make video calls on my current phone, does that mean i can receive 3g in my area?

will you use the blackberry plan? if not i'd go for the G1, the android platform is really starting to come into it's own now with users releasing ever improving roms on an almost daily basis. Battery life is now fine for a device of its type as well.

Isnt the Bold a 8900 with 3G and worse camera?

Nope not in the slightest...they look similar but the Bold is bigger and wider than the 8900. But yes it has a worse camera...about par with the iphone but does have 3G.

I've just been told by T-mobile that they will be doing the Touch Diamond 2 in about two weeks. It will be called the MDA Compact V

The fact it runs on Winmo says it all really:p...possibly the worst mobile OS out there.

yeh id be using the plan.

i have been looking at the tarrifs from O2 for new customers and they are a bit shocking to be honest!

online 25 with bb bolt on - £763 over 18 months
400txts 200mins

online 30 with bb bolt on - £802 over 18 months
1000txts 400mins

online 35 with bb bolt on - £665 over 18 months
1000txts 600mins

going to see what deal they offer me when my contract runs out, im on online 30 @ £20 a month so im hoping they will do a nice deal, they would be stupid not to, tbh, i could buy a netbook and the internet for less than £665 over 18months

Other then camera, 3G and size (worse screen then 8900) whats better with bold?

Faster processor, bigger screen although the 8900 has a better res but its smaller and i like to have as big a screen;). More internal storage as well. 3G for me is a big big factor..without that phones arent worth considering and ive had the 8900 for a week before i sent it back...couldnt see the point of having it when it doesnt have 3G...so instead upgraded to another Bold with Tmobile...sold the one i upgraded to as didnt see the point of having 2 of them:D

Now if the 8900 was 3G then id have been over it like a rash...not saying its a rubbish device, i liked the form factor of it...its small, light and thin.
