thinking about this as a cpu upgrade to a i3 2120

now the most and only demanding task this machine will need to do is games.
the appeal of the chip is its OC potential compared to zero potential with the 2120

so... in games.. is the OC more worth while that the HT?

also, heat is always an issue in my HTPC case.
how many steps are there on these chips? ie can the chip sit somewhere lower than max if not doing a demanding task?

Single core wise the g3258 will be a clear winner especially if doing a nice OC, however im inclined to think that most games take advantage of at least two cores now days so believe the i3 might just have the edge due to the HT ?

Its quite a hard question if im honest !!!! LOL :D

that really is the question
do modern games (ie ones that would push this chip) take advantage of HT.

from what i am reading there isnt a clear answer
some people are saying it helps in an i3

I believe the more cpu demanding games will take advantage of the HT. :)

But does that small difference count when your Pentium could potentially be at or around 4.5ghz......

its a tight call mate.

it is, and im suspecting it may vary wildly per game
i suspect its not as easy as one is a little better than the other but more one may be a lot better than the other depending on if the game uses HT effectively!

Exactly ,, HT vs IIRC core quality. :)

i had the temptation to put a bigger cpu in and get a h70 cooler and just hang it out the back of the case

lmao :D:D Had similar thoughts myself in the past. But in the end i bottled it, went with a larger itx case that fits a H100i.

I forgot to ask , do you already have the motherboard for the 2120 ?
So you would need to buy a 1150 board as well ?

i only have the board for the 2120

So its going to be slightly more outlay for minimal performance increase. Im leaning towards sticking with the i3 mate. ;)

how about a second hand haswell i3/i5 ?? will make the performance increase more beneficial.

;)

the problem with anything more is the cooling.
I dont monitor the cooling but i oly have a scythe shuriken (low profile) cooler in atm

you seem to be right. the increase does seem minimal or luck based on if the game is dual core or HT friendly

only way i think i could go up is the external cooler

The scythe shuriken is not the best low profile cooler I have used. I ended up changing to this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-024-NC&groupid=701&catid=2330&subcat=2334 on the kids itx system.
Its probably the best low pofile your going to get , but as you said mouting a H60 externally is far better option if you manage it. :)

Hmm so really the only worth while option is an i5 or something with better cooling ?

If it helps I like games like fallout, tomb raider and crysis. Not battle field, cod etc

All cpus seem to be about 3.3ghz with varying turbo.
If I keep my board I will have to get a non K cpu as I think I'm on h61

you want a hyperthreaded cpu if you play those games,it will help a lot

what gpu you using?

I have an i3 3220 with 7850 gpu and it copes well with most games, max payne 3,l.a.noire I have to turn few setting down for that

aint played tomb raider or crysis on it though

i have a i3 2120 and a 7850 - sounds pretty similar to your setup

i did wonder if these complex (code complex) games would be more evenly split than others.

top chip (i think) i can get in this is i5 3570 with its decent turbo

anything more i would need a K series and new mobo
