G3258 getting past 4.2

Hi all

Its my first time oc'ing on haswell and its seems I am running out of talent

Has anyone done a lot of clocking on this chip and can help me out?

CPU is set to 42x100 with 1.25v on the vcore and memory is at 2400(ram is Vulcan 2400 8gb). Haven't touched any uncore or loop settings as quite frankly I need to learn more about them :(

Its been stable for 24hrs at 4.2 but i just cant seem to get over it. Going to 1.3v will mean a post into desktop but then reboots, so guessing more tinkering is required

Can anyone help with some setups they have used. Mobo is a z87-g45 btw

Kuhler 950 AIO watercooler. Tops out at 50 degrees on full load atm so know i have headroom

Thanks the link btw

Had a read through and now have it up to 4.5ghz :). Put it through a few firestrike runs and max reported temps were 73 degrees by coretemp with fans set to silent on watercooler. Might try easing back the voltage now as that's at 1.365v. Good to know it can do it though
 
I read that Haswell has a problem with high memory speeds and you have to sacrifice your CPU clock if you want faster RAM.

Of course I'd recommend sacrificing RAM speed for a better CPU OC. Interestingly high RAM speeds cause bad frame-times with Haswell. 1600 with tight timings produces the best results most of the time even if the FPS is slightly lower than 2000+
 
Have the normal ram speed set as 1333 with the XMP 2400 seems to be all good

After just over 30 mins on prime95 temps capped at 79 /71 on cores....are they safe temps?

Yeah that's fine. What is your OC now? Are you running the RAM at 1333 or are you using the XMP?

Also, with Haswell having the uncore at 100mhz lower than the coreclock produces the highest framerates and frame-times (better than having it 1:1). So for example 4.4 core/4.3 uncore.

oh cool, I have the ring(that's uncore isn't it?) at 39x100 and core at 45x100

Was worried about cranking up the uncore too much as my knowledge isn't huge on it, so do you suggest setting it to 4.4 then in my case?

Ideally 4.4 yeah. I wouldn't go higher than 1.25 on the Ring (or uncore depending on the board) voltage though. If you can't get it stable at 4.4 then having it set at the stock clock (3.2? Or if the CPU has a boost clock then set it at that) produces stable results.

I shall have a go later on then :)

The G3258 doesn't have a turbo function on it so will just go for the 4.4

I think I have the ring set to 1.1 or 1.15 at the moment, so will just leave that alone

Wondering if this may allow me to drop my core voltage a bit if I find the sweet spot on other settings? My temps at 4.2Ghz are greatly lower than 4.5Ghz due to the extra jump from 1.250 > 1.375
