Hi there.

I was recently asked by my father if I could get him a new CPU, as the old athlon 64 x2 250 is just not pulling it's weight anymore :(.

Looking around I found that G3258 will be the best and cheapest option, but now need help choosing a motherboard please. The motherboard has to be compatible out of the box without the need to update the BIOS, because I don't have a spare CPU to update it with. Something that will allow OC to 4.2+ without a problem would be nice. Also maybe a custom cooler to help the OC if budget allows. Ideas please? Case is an Antec 300 so no monster coolers :p.

Looking to spend £150 on CPU, MOBO and maybe a custom cooler to help the OC, never a bad idea right?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you :).

What does he use the PC for?
And what is his full current spec?
Best to get the full story before we recommend a spec.

(I run an Athlon x2 270, and it's fine for everyday tasks and all the gaming i do (older AAA titles and Indie games).)

To be 100% sure of this you would need a Z97 based board - in theory the H81 boards still available may have a new enough bios on, but you never know how long they have been laying about in a warehouse.

Thanks for all the replies! :)

Check out this list of H81 boards for overclocking the pentium.

Alternatively, spend a bit more on a hex core fx 6300, Which will be better in general.

He only uses it for gaming only so G3258 would be a much better choice I think?
I'll check that link thanks.

The current spec is a GTX560 TI, 500 gb hdd and g.skillripjaws Z 8gb 2000mhz.

He only uses the PC for gaming. World of tanks mostly, and it runs crap on the AMD, down to 20fps most times with all the settings on lowest possible. There is plenty of videos with G3258 running WOT at well above 60fps no problem and it does perform like the latest i7 quads in most games that are out these days. Also wanted to play BF4 with some friends but it was just unplayable too on the current CPU ;/.

you can overclock the Pentium on most 1150 motherboards. it would be a good idea to get a smaller air cooler as there is less to go wrong.

Most are indeed but I need one compatible out the box, there's the problem :/. Thanks for the cooler recomendations.
I used a Z97 PC-Mate with my G3258, clocked it to 4.4GHz with the stock cooler. :D

Was it compatible out of the box or did you have to update the BIOS before the CPU worked??

The Z97 PC-Mate was designed specifically for the G3258, to fill the budget Z97 gap. :)

I didn't have to update the BIOS.

both the coolers i recommend will both fit out the box

^it doesn't say anything about the ram running at it's rated speed. it's just listing the parts. :p

also, i have to say i think it's bonkers sticking a 30 quid cooler on one of these. you might as well get a better cpu instead. the stock cooler is more than capable enough for 4.2ghz.
