so got my old desktop back working and it is slow (9500 phenom ati 5550)

so again im thiking back to upgrading and while i see the FX6300 as being viewed as a great value cpu. however my laptop with an i5 2410m its so much faster than the old phenom im looking at intel again. the G3320 seems to be a sweet spot, cheap yet its clock means it should still be faster than what im normally using anyway. (plus going for it would mean i could in theory upgrade the cpu later)

the 3 cpu killing things i do are WOW, firefox and Paradox games, (EU3,4, HOI3, 2, Crusader Kings 2, etc etc.

so the biggest 2 wow and firefox are single threaded so thats making me thing the G3320 would be the better option but im not sure. i so wish there was somewhere you could play with machines to see how they perform in use. since there isnt has anyone used both or got a thought on the subject.

As much as I dislike AMD CPU's for gaming I can not recommend the Pentium over the FX6300.

The FX is just a better 'all round' CPU while the Pentium will have a slight advantage on the things you do the FX will pretty much destroy it on everything else..... And I mean DESTROY it...

like what though? dont get me wrong ive normally gone amd but when i got my old 9500 i thought oooh quad core but nothing makes of use of them. thats my im thinking maybe the dual would be better for me?

The Pentium will be faster for gaming, and a lot of other programs that benefit from higher IPC, and it will also use significantly less power. Plus if you're on 1150 you would have the option to upgrade to another more powerful Intel CPU in the future, whereas AMD's current options are sort of limited, and let's be honest years behind Intel in terms of performance and power use.

The sweet spot for Haswell Pentiums is the Intel Pentium G3420, can be had for under £50. Whereas the FX is about £85. Gaming wise the Intel chip wouldn't hold back any single GPU setup, very good for gaming.

Wow does favour Intel better than AMD. But I just downgraded from an i7 to an fx8320, i've noticed a wee performance hit, but it isnt that much. If you plan on playing those old sorta games, then get the Intel. But if you're planning on playing any new ones, go for amd.

No offence but I've never seen so much nonsense so tightly packed into one post.

I've seen plenty of that packed in a lot of your posts :p

What's not to like about Intel Pentiums?

Cheap, low power use, great for gaming, and on a socket that is still relevant.

If you don't like those things fair enough. The great thing about forums is people can give different views, than the OP can make his mind up based on lot's of different opinions. At less than £50 the Intel Pentium G3420 is an absolute steal.

LOL what a manipulative post. Cheap and low power use? yeah we can agree on that. Sadly near on every game released in the last 18 months wants more than two cores.

And more importantly -

The 6300 will walk all over the Intel products that exist at the $132 price point, and in fact is more competitive in terms of performance with the $185 Intel products

As such, if a 6300 walks all over a I3 then it's sure as hell going to beat a Pentium.

Do the Pentiums have a place in the market? yes, certainly. In cheap, low end, cut back rigs. IE - Pentium and a 7770.

The 6300? can mix it with the big boys in a highish end gaming rig. IE - it can be paired up with something like a 7970 and put out more than enough grunt to power high end settings. But to suggest a Pentium can mix it with an overclockable hex cored CPU is just complete and utter brainwash gibberish.

In fact you'd have a hard job selling any one a Pentium, given AMD make APUs that are just as quick with a decent GPU bolted to them.

Anyone who said a 2 core Intel Pentium is same or more powerful than a 6 core AMD Piledrive, please go to see the doctor. :D

At below £100 mark, the FX6300 has no competition. Full stop.

@mark2410
What is your budget? That will help us better to make an indication of what you can get, not which one is better.

And maybe consider waiting the new AMD Kaveri in January tbh, if you are on that low budget, for sub £100 for CPU.

No one said it was more powerful lol. The Intel Pentium is a lot cheaper, £47 VS £85 (So £38 pounds cheaper, enough for a 1150 mobo). Better IPC, more relevant platform, lower power use, better for gaming, but not more powerful. I'm sure in some situations the extra cores of the AMD could be useful, video encoding etc.

I'd be very surprised if the G3320 isn't bottlenecking a 7970 (even at stock).

There really is no comparison. The FX6300 is probably the best value/performance ratio CPU for gaming. It would be utter madness recommending the 2 core pentium over the AMD chip in this case. The latter are cheap, clock well and are also brilliant performers in well-threaded games like BF4/Crysis 3 etc.

Totally agree with Andy and Panos.

Two of my mates play a reasonable amount of WoW. One has an FX6350 at 4.4GHZ with a GTX650TI Boost 2GB and the other an FX6300 at 4.3GHZ with an HD7870XT/LE 2GB and they seem to run it fine at 1920X1080. Even at stock clockspeeds both CPUs were fine.

WoW is such an old game that IIRC anything much over 60FPS supposedly can cause issues.

You could buy the Pentium chip (Intel Pentium G3420 3.2Ghz) and a 1150 motherboard for the cost of the AMD chip alone.

It uses less power, is better for gaming despite what people will say here, will not bottleneck any single GPU. Better IPC, more upgrade options in the future. It is a very relevant option.

I have built enough systems of all shapes and sizes to know what I am talking about, these Pentiums are amazing value for money.

For modern games like BF4 paired with a decent cards like a 7970, the pentium I'm afraid won't be adequate for anyone wishing to run higher settings. That's just reality. Not saying they aren't good value for money but for performance to price ratio, the FX6300 is better.

The Pentium is useless with any demanding game. You're comparing a cheap entry level CPU with a decent overclockable mid-high end one.

As I said (and posted a link for reference) the 6300 can duke it out with Intel's high end offerings. The Pentium would not stand a chance. Yes they have a decent IPC but their clock rates are always totally lame.

The Pentium will only cost you more in the long run as you need to get a newer CPU quicker anyway.

An FX6300 and a Asus M5A97 R2.0 can be had for around £140,and some overclocking is possible on the motherboard too.

Considering that my mate who has the FX6300 has 600+ games and is one of the biggest gamers I have ever known, and plays lot of online and indie titles too,he has no issues so far with his CPU. He could afford to spend more on his PC,but ended up putting the money towards his other PCs.

He seems to be lacking in the reality stakes. I really, truly can't believe some of the nonsense that flies around on forums sometimes.

A couple of years back I took a Celeron G530 dual core. Sandybridge, same cores as the I5s and so on.

http://www.fruitforums.com/vb/showthread.php?34744-Celeron-G530-Review

Benched it, gamed it, found out that two cores with a lame clock simply couldn't cut it. Now I'm not taking anything away from these seriously stripped down and cut back CPUs Intel make (they have to given AMD are crushing them with APUs) but to claim that one won't hold back a top end single GPU is absolute ball sacks.

You'll find my review is completely relevant there, given I used a GTX 480 and Sandybridge (it would be totally comparable to the Pentium and 7970 for example) and in 50% of scenarios the dual core CPU just completely chokes.

And that was pre any of these games that support more cores.

Apologies for my language. I tend to swear a lot.
