I know almost zero about the macs but someone is giving me a G4 desktop. Can someone who has had one give their opinion. Cheers in advance, I'm assuming it's an old out of date tech which is well made.

Either will be a G4 iMac or PowerMac.

Is fine for most things like e-mail and browsing. Can't really do any heavy lifting unless it has a dual processor if it is a PowerMac.

The older models (like the Graphite one) are capable only of running OS 9 or older versions of OS X. I've got one which runs Debian quite well. Quick machines in their day, but incredibly slow compared to a modern machine... OK for web browsing and word processing, though. We used to make magazines on these and their predecessors, so they're fairly capable.
