Hi all,
can somebody tell me the difference between the two apart from the fact that one has more buttons than the other. I read the 500S is laser, while the G400S is optical. How will this affect me?

Will I need a mat for the laser to work, because my MX518 didn't need one and that was optical.

Cheers

The difference isn't huge, probably the biggest is as you stated, the 500s is laser whilst the 400s is optical, I have the G400 and wouldn't change it for the world and it's an optical, and I am a 'gamer'.

Other than that the 500s has a different look, a few extra buttons and you can make 1 custom profile to what I believe.

Here is a video from Linus talking about the difference between optical and laser, should help you out.

As for a mouse mat, it wouldn't be needed for the mouse to function, but for gaming I would highly recommend one, even a cheap steelseries one can make a big difference.

Thanks a lot man. Only thing I found both of the both for £40 and difficult to decide which. I h ave had the MX518 and loved it. The G500S seems just too complicated and the side buttons are in awkward position.

The MX518 is a brilliant mouse and very reputable, loved by many and also I believe its not in production anymore, so whatever you choose, do not throw it out! ^^

Personally if I was in your position, I would go with the G400/400S, as they are the exact same design as the MX518, so you don't have to adjust to anything new.

Good luck with your decision! :)

The 500s is laser(as already mentioned), has onboard memory for storing a profile(also mentioned), comes with changeable weights, has higher DPI, has more buttons/different button layout, different shape wise to the 400s.
Think that's the differences.
I'm also trying to decide between the two, I currently have the g9(non-x version) so 'used to the laser'.

laser vs optical makes quite a big difference, if you are used to optical mice, it's probably best to just get a G400s and stick with it.

if you play mainly FPS games however, i believe laser mice are optimal there for the crazy high sensitivity settings you can achieve with them.

2 things wrong with this post.

1. Optical is better for fps. Every laser sensor ever made has some form of inherent hardware acceleration that can't be turned off. Regardless of whether or not you're sensitive to this acceleration (some people can notice even small amounts and hate it, like me and others don't care at all which is fine), at a purely objective level this means optical is superior.

2. Crazy high sensitivity makes your aim worse in fps. There's a reason every professional fps player that I know of uses low (20cm/360 or more) sensitivity.

I just ordered the g500s. I hope I made the right the decision as it was based on the fact that it was cheaper than the 400s.

Gotta wait and see

I could never get on with them laser mouses ..when I game I lift the mouse slighty coz I play with a low sens and drag it about slighty by lifting the sides quickly while moving about and the laser mice doesn't like it ...stops tracking when lifted off the surface .
It used to happen with the 1st laser mouses when they came out and tried a Logitech last year and it did the same, If you play with a high sens it maybe ok tho
Lasers like to be completely flat down all the time I find
Ps I have a Logitech g400 and g400s and find them very good

I just got it, so nice but I have to say it's rather big, def prefer the size of mx518. Oh well will get used to it. BTW is it the side supposed to feel quite rough as opposed to the smooth mx815?

it must be the new designs my gs400s has rough edges too ..my g400 has not,
I kinda like the rougher feel suppose its better for sweaty hands
Logitech sent me a brand new g400s as my old g400 broke..nice of them :)

Anyone tell me how many custom profiles the G500s can store onboard simultaneously please?
My Roccat decided to die again, permanently this time
