Being a total noob, and not liking to play with BIOS options I don't understand, I need to know how to get my E6600 to work at it's rated 2.4GHz (currently 1.6GHz).

I think I know, but I start seeing messages like 'System voltage NOT optimized' and run away. :(

I don't want to overclock - I just want it to run like it's supposed to. Help this noob please. :)

Go into BIOS, and click optimised defaults, that will set the chip to default speed. The reason its likely dropping down to 1600 is speedstep, or whatever Intel call it now, basically whent he chips not being used much, it reverts to a lower frequency so it produces less heat and uses less energy :)

Hope that helps.

Thanks. It was indeed SpeedStep (which I've now disabled, since I won't be running the CPU unloaded much). It's now running at what it should be - 2.4GHz.

While I'm here, can I confirm that I'm fine to leave the memory multiplier on Auto. It's showing memory frequency as 800MHz which I believe matches what I have (GeIL PC6400C4).

It's not as stupid a question as it seems, because I have no way to check settings other than the BIOS (this box runs Linux, so the usual CPU-Z stuff is of no use). :)

If its being detected as 800MHz, and is running at that with the correct timings then it should be fine :)

Glad you got your issue resolved :)
